I’m gonna miss you Answer Man! Thank you sir for the years you kindly gave of yourself, providing helpful information for all of us…answering so many questions…sharing your knowledge and experiences. I’ve saved many of your responses, sure that at some time in the future I will benefit from having them as a reference. I also appreciate that your humor was often sprinkled through your responses, keeping things interesting. God Bless you for blessing us!
I want to give high fives to all the volunteers who worked so hard in this heat to put on a fabulous Homecoming. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to work a shift at a food stand and a huge shout out to those who worked all week setting up stands, tables, grills, etc and then worked all weekend to keep everything going smoothly. And then those hard-working folks went back Monday to start taking it all down. Thank you volunteers for giving us such a nice festival in a very nice park.
Middle School and High School did an awesome job at the Homecoming Parade.
I agree. Wonderful Job. I did not see any high school athletic groups in either of the parades.
I saw the bass fishing team, the cheerleaders, the dance team, the colorguard, the football team. The band parents are the ones that cause all this division. The same ones that leave as soon as their student is done performing at the football games. Drives me crazy!
HAHA fishing team?? So if they catch anything but a bass they have to do 10 laps??
It goes both ways. The athletic parents can attend the band and colorguard to show their kids. That drives me crazy. It starts with the parents.
if you miss them that much, why don’t you get their phone numbers and give em a call once in a while?PS,kinda sounds like you’re causing a division
Don’t think they do. Just calling out some hypocritical band parents
I can’t believe you’re jealous of the band. That’s a first .
you have no idea why the band parents leave, maybe they or their kids have other places they have to be or other priorities,if it drives you crazy, kinda sounds like it would be a short drive
Mascoutah Homecoming is a great event. I can’t help but notice though, the unsafe food handling practices from the vendors though. Whatever the name of the place that serves the potato pancakes had a lady sitting there reaching into the bag of buns. It was hot outside, so I know she was sweaty and who knows if her hands were clean or not. She’s reaching in grabbing buns, opening them up…all with no gloves on. Then getting ice cream I could see fingers of the servers coming in contact with customers ice cream while handing to them. Now I’m not a super germaphobe, but isn’t there health safety standards they need to follow??? I’m pretty sure I won’t die from it, but it is kind of nasty to serve the public with your bare hands. Oh well, you take a risk with that food no matter what anyway. Just something that caught my eye and made me wonder if the city noticed and plan to take some food safety precautions in future years.
I actually prefer a dirty thumb in my potato pancake. Maybe that’s just me
Food handling at these events is always troubling ,it can and sometimes does leads to serious illness. The consequences of this careless behavior has canceled more than one event permanently and cost suffering and lawsuits .
Think I trust seeing what I saw at the homecoming more than any local establishments where hidden in the kitchen lol
During the parade last night one of the school bands were passing. Don’t remember which one because I was shocked to see an adult volunteer/teacher whatever give water to a band student from a bottle. No big deal right? But then this volunteer gave another band student a drink from the same bottle. School hasn’t even started yet and we’re trying to shut it down with another round of covid?
Agree, this is a serious health violation, thank you for posting.
Does anyone feel the color guard outfits, specifically turtle neck and black leggings were well, almost abusive during a public health heat warning? Would you dress our toddler like this for the parade? Why risk heat exhaustion, matching white shorts and a t-shirt outfits like the band members? Bottom line, great performance from the color guard, thanks for your volunteerism and support for our school and community.
Oh boy here we go again. Every band member I saw was pouring water in their mouth. Grow up and find something else to complain about
OMG, don’t you have something better to do?
You were shocked by this?! Apparently it doesn’t take much to shock you
Had a blast at the annual Mascoutah Covid superspreader,I mean homecoming haha
If you were so worried about a super spreader, why did you even go?just wondering
I think the comment was making fun of being a superspreader. The busy bodies talking about sharing water and handling food with there hands need to lighten up. Or just stay home would be the best thing for all of us.
yeah,after i read it again,think you’re right,just making fun,i apologize
I was being sarcastic. Time to move on and enjoy our freedom
How come the Mascoutah Mcdonalds thinks its ok to pane handle money? Plus no other Mcdonalds in the St Louis area does this.
They are not panhandling. They ask if you would like to donate to the Ronald McDonald House charity. You have the option to simply say “no, thank you”. Other McDonald’s in the area also ask the same question. Dairy Queen restaurants also do it to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. And just as it is at any McDonald’s, you can simply say no.
Just like pan handling, just say no
Casey’s is also asking for donations at the register. Can’t remember what its for.
If you’re brave enough to eat there, go ahead and donate the change!
They, along with every other business nationwide, are extremely short of change, specifically quarters. it’s a nationwide problem, better to ask for donations than try to figure out to give change when you don’t have any. Get over it, and yourself, already.
There is no coin shortage. Liberals will believe anything.
High school band did an awesome job tonight at the parent preview.
This goes out to the contractor building the new Scooters coffee shop. I work in construction and I have never seen it take such a long time to build such a small structure. The owner of the shop should be very disappointed in you. The site is a mess with debris everywhere. The owner should have hired a union contractor. All I can say is you get what you paid for.
Supply Chain issues, Worker shortages, and lead times. Corporate hires lowest bidder. Construction sites have debris. It’s under construction. It is not complete.
Lol say what you want. Poor job
I agree, Since no business makes it on cursed ground, they could be screwed.
Union or non-union doesn’t matter. In my experience, the only “benefit” I have had when hiring union over non-union is I get to pay more for the same job.
And usually twice as many people to do the same job when union.
Paying more is a benefit??
That’s cute. Union vs non union. Bet you also like to use the term scabs
What’s a term scab?? Union’s were needed 80-90 years ago. But they got more greedy then the employers that were screwing people in the first place. Give and inch, they take a mile.
What a lot of union workers call non union workers. (That’s ok to degrade them apparently)
I’m a union worker. I’m no better than a non union worker. We’re all just trying to make a living. The term scab is misunderstood by so many, that they think it means non-union worker. It means a union worker that crosses a picket line.
And that’s ok to be calling them names? Interesting
You must not be well traveled
This sounds like a union vs. non-union complaint. There is such a shortage right now in people that do trades, no one should be out of work or complaining. If you are, either you suck at what you are doing or your to stupid to get off your butt and go find work, period. I personally don’t care if the people building it is union or not, not my problem. I’m more curious about the owners and their integrity. I keep seeing posts on FB about woman owned, veteran owned. Another, who cares.. good for her. That just means she probably got a bunch of free money to get this going. Are they going to give vets or disabled people free products, I highly doubt it. I’m going to take a look and see if they are one of the very many that work the system and get tax free money, no real estate taxes, etc. because they are stressed, cpap, twist an ankle or something. Hopefully, they aren’t and have good ethics. Looking forward to seeing the first wave of people paying $5.00 for microwave food and/or coffee.
Looked up the new owners, another fully disabled vet, sucking up tax payers money. Nice they are 100% disabled, don’t pay taxes and get a ton of tax money free a month for life but can still perform the task as a business start up. What a joke.
How do you look up if someone is 100 % through the VA. That info should be private medical information right. Only asking becUse I know a guy who says he’s 100 % but homeless?
How did you look up their va disability rating? that information is not public. Unless you work for the va and used your position within the va to violate their privacy.
I enjoyed watching the band practice this evening at the high school. Great Job!
Same here. Would it be possible to post the dates of the practices and competitions? I would like to watch them more.
Just don’t fly over the band with a drone. They freak out. Not because a drone is over head, For some reason they think other schools are spying on them . Come on, the band???
Clean out your adjacent storm drains. The City isn’t going to do it. Don’t blow grass into the street. Buy a jug of roundup. Mow & weedwhack that extra two minutes. Plant some flowers. Have some respect for your neighbors. Pick up your dog fecies.
I agree.
Don’t blow grass in the street??
In Illinois blowing grass clippings onto streets is illegal. Grass clippings are considered litter.
There are fines.
Well get out there and protect our streets!
Some of these City Roads have two feet tall weeds growing
Woohoo! Go City Roads!
Where
I like the flower pots in the park. Some added flavor & decor. Well done.
Looks great
MIA cut grass mower. Grass in several parts of the park looks terrible for not being mowed yet pretty sure not growing too fast with the heat and such. Hopefully cut before the homecoming
The MIA has employees?
Missing in action
What is wrong with the United States post office. Two letter sent two weeks apart never arrived at their destination.
DeJoy would be the man to thank. Money taken away from all the United States Post Offices, less sorting machines, less postal workers, & shorter hours.
Lazy, union employees in the big offices! Hate filled excrement.
I love Mascoutah! Such a great small town & good people. Sound off is a good way to voice our opinions. But the sarcasm & rude replies are truly unnecessary. I’m aware some of us are critical of the spelling, but come on now must rudeness follow the critique?
Great point. But, did you miss a comma there?
What’s this & ?? It should be “and”. You should know better.
You guys crack me up. Lol!!!
I read in the Herald that the queen contest is cancelled. All they have to do is sell tickets to win. It’s not like they need a talent or anything. Kids are so lazy now days.
I’m assuming you are talking about the Mascoutah Homecoming queen? I agree. I can’t believe in a town this size, they can’t find a few young ladies that want to help support the homecoming. They make money buy selling the tickets. What a shame.
It’s not that they can’t find any young ladies to do it. It’s the whole generation that just don’t get it.
I don’t want my daughter going around soliciting
OMG! You are so…never mind. You’re not smart enough to understand anyway.
Ok Boomer
I thought there would be a lot more people upset about the canceling of the homecoming queen pageant. No one really seems to care. Interesting.
Who want to see someone win because they and there family go and sell tickets to win. Find some that actually have a talent and then maybe. It’s been a joke since day one.
Sure! Kids are so lazy because they don’t want to enter into some degrading, exploitive beauty show instead of finding literally any other way to support our homecoming and our town’s parks!
And another that just can’t figure it out.
Degrading exploitive beauty show?? They sell raffle tickets to win the title, it’s not a beauty contest LMAO
In that case, just sell the raffle tickets. Offer a prize or something. Why does there need to be a Miss/Little Miss Mascoutah?
With time comes change. Maybe this is one of those things that is coming to an end. Doesn’t make it bad.
Maybe there is no interest in a Queen contest because it is an outdated tradition that lacks equal treatment of genders.
Data is implying the majority of this country supports equal rights
I watched the Uvalde police response video that was released a week or so ago. Reminded me of the Keystone Cops.
I never would have thought that Texan’s would be to scared to use a gun. So there not so high and mighty as they think they are. Whimps
Did you actually receive an education? “to” should be spelled, “too”. There should be a comma following, “So”, and “there” should be spelled, “they’re”. If you want people to take you seriously, learn to spell.
Maybe you should have your eyes checked before you start showing your stupidity.
Well, that was intelligent!
Scott Battas is once again asking the town to support the athletes. We should support ALL students, not just the athletes.
Support them?? Are they falling over ?
He is the athletic director! It sounds like you are a band parent, tell your band director to promote the band program!
I agree. Some kids are good in math or science. Others are good actors or singers. Some are band or colorguard.
What’s funny is most people in the band (learning an instrument) end up using it the rest of life. Where average athletes (the ones in high school) just end up playing softball and drink beer. Then push there own children to play a sport they couldn’t
You know what? You are so right. All of my friends that were in band, just walk around playing their trumpet. Oh….and they also like to whip out a recorder at backyard get togethers and play hot cross buns.
Never thought about like that. I had two friends play in the band back in the 70/s. Both are retired musicians in vegas.
This is categorically false.
Hahaha. Hey Karen…when is the last time you picked up your clarinet???? Lmao. Too bad you don’t have any friends… you might get invited to softball to have a beer!
He is the athletic director so…….
I appreciate the notifications about Mascoutah athletics. I have to imagine it makes the student athletes proud when their program, their teammates, or even themselves are highlighted on one of Scott’s notifications.
It’s clear he is passionate, a great leader, and an even better role model to all students, not just athletes.
He is the athletic director…… have your reached out to ask if there are options the school could find ways to promote or support ALL students? In my experience, the district goes above and beyond to promote and support ALL students. Find it odd that a person would attack him for promoting athletics. Seems petty.
That’s his job. And he is doing a fine job. Football and Basketball are now relevant. He is Winning.
He is teaching kids to exclude others.
You have got a good point.
How is he teaching kids to exclude others? That is a pretty powerful statement. I think his original post was with Fall sports season kicking off, lets paint the town purple. Maybe he should have said with school starting, lets paint the town purple. But lets face it, sports drives a lot of people to the school. Weather its watching the student athletes, dance and cheer teams, colorguard, band, etc., don’t we want people to be engaged and provide a great atmosphere for all these kids to succeed? Doesn’t make sense why people want to tear everyone down.
Or, maybe he’s just staying in his lane. IT’S HIS JOB TO SUPPORT THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. Good grief people.
It this a joke? Find someone in our town who promotes our kids or community more than him…. I’ll wait.
Scott Battas is doing a Excellent Job as MHS Athletic Director. Look at MHS athletic programs and facilities, some of the Best in the Area!! We are fortunate and blessed to have a AD that cares about the students/school/town. Mr. Battas thanks for your hard work and dedication… GO PURPLE!!!
Put your name behind slandering someone that has accomplished 100x more than you will ever accomplish for this town and school district. What a joke of a human being you are.
Has anyone ever noticed how unkept the Post Office is getting? There is garbage and trash around the outside and weeds and grass growing in the sidewalks. Mold is growing on the entrance to the building. It’s disgusting. Where is the pride? I think our government should set an example, not be the subject of the joke.
Maybe as a town we can all clean up the town.
It’s not a question of where is the pride. It’s where is the money.
I agree! Because of DeJoy taking over the United States Postal Service, every post office has gone downhill. Less workers, less money, slower service in mailing & bigger cities finding it hard to keep up demand of those said services. I love our small town post office, but how can they possibly keep up with the outside when the inside works (mailing, delivering, and customers) is their top priority!
have you check out the nite deposit parking lot It looks like a scrap yard lot
Before you go bad mouthing a local establishment, maybe do your research. The nite deposit does not own that parking lot, nor do they pay anything to have that parking lot used by its customers.
That is NOT their parking lot… get your facts straight before bad mouthing the Nite Deposit!!!
The word is unkempt. Not unkept. I hear the USPS is installing slot machines to raise money in order to paint the building black. It’s a trend.
Can an out-of-district student go to a Mascoutah school?
I do not believe so. At registration we have to provide two items to verify our address.
I guess I meant can an out-of-district student attend even if they had to pay a tuition or extra fee?
Yes, they can pay tuition
So as long as a student pays tuition, they do not have to live in Mascoutah? I emailed the Superintendent but he never got back to me. I would really like my son to attend Mascoutah and would be willing to pay for the privilege. Is there someone other than the Superintendent I should contact?
Go to the administration office.
Shouldn’t be able to
Disappointed with the fireworks display. This is the first time in 10 plus years we couldn’t see the fireworks from our yard. They were very low… was this a ploy to get people to watch from the park or did the city take the cheap route????
I think its a ploy for everyone to chop down all tall trees.
I blame it on all the free handouts the government gives to anyone that twists an ankle during service. We are the land of the free handouts, hhmmm maybe that is why our inflation is so high…
“I won’t insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said” –William F. Buckley
Sad part of your comment is they don’t have to be active in the service to get a disability exemption. They can be 70 and if there hearing starts going bad they get the exemption.
All of the following rate property tax exemptions why don’t we rip on those that are financially responsible, old, and severly injuered on the job or in car acidents to while we’re at it.
Homeowner Exemption
Senior Citizen Exemption
Senior Freeze Exemption
Longtime Homeowner Exemption
Home Improvement Exemption
Returning Veterans’ Exemption
Disabled Veterans’ Exemption
Disabled Persons’ Exemption
Nice try, first 3 are the only exemptions in this county. But it is fun just making up stuff isn’t it???
Actually, more than just 3 apply in St. Clair County, as well as additional exemptions such as Special Adapted Housing, Fraternal Organizations and Veteran’s Organizations. However, the exemptions typically either result in a lump sum deduction from the assessed value or a freeze at a certain assessment level. There is only exemption that eliminates property tax completely up to a certain assessment.
The ONLY one that has any type of material exemption or savings is the Disabled Vets. Look it up! Illinois freezes taxes for the elderly. If you are 100% disabled, you may save like 5% of your real estate taxes. If you are a Vet, and say it is due to service, you can get 70% and up to 100% disability, both qualify for no taxes, plus up to $3,7xx a month, TAX FREE income, plus, plus, plus… Its a scam… I wish they would take it away.
As a veteran, it is common knowledge when we get out to try to get our VA money. There are firms and people on base that are subject matter experts. It is being misused. Veterans feel entitled because we signed up to serve. In reality, most of us have never really been to combat. Airforce combat for most is nothing like we see on tv. My point is, our government wanted votes, they opened it up to get VA compensation, 100% tax exemption and dependent 100% school tuition on the tax payer, for VOTES. For those brothers and sisters that really got injured for serving, please take care of the. Too many Army and Marines don’t get what the Air Force get. Now if you have a CPAP, its 50% disabled, WHAT A JOKE. then PTSD you get yourself to 70%. I’ve seen maps of names and houses, which equal about 48% of the new homes north of town that don’t pay taxes and get compensated. Look at the bigger homes, the cars they drive and then look it up in the st. clair county website. I bet you 98% are disabled. I have a tore knee and have a cpap, not going to claim, I signed up to serve my country and to me that is no different than working anywhere else and getting hurt. VA is working on stopping the CPAP and making things a lot harder, you better hope you qualify for the 5 rule! Honorable Vets not injured and citizens are disgusted by this new welfare program. Your hurting the country!
I can get 50% for my CPAP? I only get 10% for my respiratory issues that developed on active duty. CPAP can be directly correlated to my asthma. VA, here I come!
You know who gains from this, the home builders. Think about it… They are charging $4xx some on these small new homes north of town and the majority of people that live there don’t pay a penny for the house or the real estate taxes. Government pays them a large sum every month, pays for home, electric, nice car, everything, then no taxes… The home builder reaps this money. They aren’t stupid, you can see the family, they make the money selling them new, financing the money for it and then reselling it when you move. They give a little back here and there for donations and act like heros. Heros don’t advertise what they do for others, wanna be celebrities do. Making money and costing us more, guess you can’t blame them.
I keep hearing about all these loop holes veterans are getting. I used to think, man, why pick on these people, they served for our country. What I have learned is, way to many people are working the system. Its rather sad. Its not hard to identify, plates, look up and then look at the people. New cars, trucks, harleys, kids have nice cars, vacations, out to dinner all the time and where does that money come from tax payers. Starting a state wide petition to stop the CPAP exemption, etc. Its horrible to think how broke our state is and then watch the amount of people abuse the system. Even worse, think about all those vets that really need help, a home, resources, but can’t get them. Your not entitled because you have common issues that someone working outside of the military encounter. I think they should limit it to war vets only!
Loop holes??? Working the system??? Care to elaborate where you learned this or what the loop holes are? Let me guess you heard from someone who heard from someone. The veteran needs to apply for VA benefits. It’s not automatic. Those claims NEED to be supported in their medical records showing a history of the issue. The records also need to include key words written by a doctor that match up to the VA regulations. Then a VA doctor evaluates the member in person to validate the claimed issues are real. That doctor makes a recommendation based off the in person exam. The VA reviews all aspects of the claim. If everything lines up, they get a rating. Don’t be mad at a vet for using a system they didn’t create. Don’t be mad at a veteran for tax exemptions they don’t control. Any vet would be a fool not to file a claim and let the process work. If it helps them monetarily, then so be it. The world is full of unfair benefits. It’s not a full proof system, but acting like it’s easy to get a high claim is proof that you have absolutely no idea how that system works. I know tons of people that file a claim and get zero or very little benefits/money. I’m willing to bet that most veterans in the area are retired receiving a retirement check and then secure a $80-$100k a yr job. Allot of times their spouse also makes good money. They’d be able to afford those nice new cars, vacations, etc regardless of VA money.
Do we really need this forum? Reading through all these comments seems like a waste of space for the paper. These comments are nothing but complaints and one sided opinions. Everyone is so negative about our town/community. I’ve lived here for over thirty years and frankly I like our little town. I’m sure there are much worse.
Instead of being like Peyton Place let’s talk about positive/uplifting things. Let’s celebrate the good things. Like our parents taught us – if you don’t have something nice to say – don’t say anything at all.
That’s why it’s called “Sound Off”. All the whinners have somewhere to vent, where no one would listen to them otherwise.
I heard through the grape vine that Mascoutah School District hired a convicted child molester. He threatened to sue the district so they hired him. Is that true. If anyone can follow up it would be appreciated.
Was the person charged or charged and convicted? There’s a big difference.
If it’s the same person I think it is, they are not a child molester. There is/ was a case against them that involved sexual assault. They did plead guilty to it.
It was not a child, if it’s the person I think it is. This individual was charged with officer misconduct/ sexual assault. They did plead guilty to it.
There is an individual working there that pled guilty to officer misconduct/sexual assault. It was not a child. But still concerning knowing that they work for the district.
What school?
They work for grounds keeping
They?? There is more than person that may or may not be employed by some department of the school district that may or may not have been charged or possibly convicted or pled to something that may or may not involve children and/or misconduct?!
I guess are tax dollars are spent on hiring criminals for the school district
I guess Black paint is on sale this month or what ever color you call it, the color of the two buildings on main street look terrible, oh and now pizza hut is following there lead. Looks like your driving through East St. Louis.
I looked at is as a way to catch your eye and make you take a second look on what idiot would do this. I guess its kinda like advertisement .
AGREED – bad decision
Couldn’t disagree more. I think what you meant to say was “their lead”. It’s OK. Grammar doesn’t come as easy as paint colors but, you’ll get there. Just wait. You’ll have to find something else to complain about soon.
Thanks for the lesson on grammar. I never would have figured out what the comment means.
I like it. Better than before. Face lift
I couldn’t agree more… it looks absolutely terrible. A big disappointment for downtown Mascoutah. The Mayor talks about wanting to make downtown look better and then this happens. BIG disappointment….
I think the black paint scheme is rather dramatic. Not something I’d have chosen, but it does catch your eye. Once the electric bills to cool the place start showing up, the owners may change their minds and try another look. Until then, take a side street and you won‘t have to see it.
Dear Mascoutah,
The city government has determined that celebrating your national freedoms with appropriate fireworks is not safe.
Trust them – they know better than you. Just accept it, and be sure to do your part by reporting your neighbors.
That is all.
Mascoutah’s a lot of things, but I don’t know of any stool pigeons. And you can use the appropriate fireworks. Hence appropriate.
Is it really that Mascoutah’s government is cracking down on fireworks? I seem to remember something called the “Pyrotechnic Use Act” in Illinois that banned most all “fireworks”. But, then again, I guess it’s easier to blame the wrong entity of government for the proscribing of certain acts/actions. Kind of like the abortion issue.
It seems that the kind of government we threw out back in 1776 is back again.
Right. The upheaval to tyranny by the Monarchy was based on the recreational use of fireworks! I knew there was a reason! Good grief.
Friendly reminder that it’s not the libs that are losing, it’s AMERICA that’s losing. Your right to medical privacy, constitutional precedent, basically everything that made the USA what it was is circling the drain as we speak. This isn’t a football game. Everyone is getting hurt, not just “the right people.”
I don’t think they took away anyone’s medical privacy . I know I’m a bit slow but what does your comment mean??
Hypothetically speaking, lets say that all but one of the states ban abortion. You would say, “ok, a woman can travel to that state. She still has a right to an abortion.” But what if that state was Hawaii? Now without making a joke about sunning on the beach after the procedure, how would a woman seriously travel there? The cost of travel would be prohibitive.
If the need to abort would be because danger to the mother, then most states can do this. If Hawaii is the only state just to do an abortion and they can’t afford to get out there, then give it up for adoption.
Abstinence is not cost prohibitive
Why does City Hall issue a business license to a Fireworks vendor who sells “illegal Mascoutah” fireworks within the city limits, and then the city cops from City Hall can thus issue citations for shooting them off? Doesn’t make sense to me.
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY
They don’t sell the illegal type of firework. Make sense now?
They selling items that shoot in the air. According to Police, that’s illegal.
If they have a report is the only illegal fireworks.
what are they selling that is illegal?
USA USA USA! Blast em off
One of the great things that the city supplies us with is the area south of town to place our yard waste. What I don’t understand is the number of residents who don’t understand the difference between grass, leaves, and sticks. Each is clearly marked and should be easily understood. According to the dictionary, a stick is a cut or broken branch or twig. Please try to do better in the future.
People are just stupid or can’t read.
Everyone knows the difference. They just don’t care. Simple enough.
I politely informed a couple the proper place for branches was in the back of the yard near the creek.
He replied, then continued to empty the trailer where the leaves are designated.
Charging a fee to recycle was supposed to rectify this type of thing. Sadly you can’t rectify stupidity, and it doesn’t help the gate is open to everyone.
Maybe the charging everyone to dump there yard waste pi**ed them off and they don’t care where they dump it.
Again you can’t fix stupid
Yes that’s fine but what about the irresponsible folks that lose part of their load on 10st on the way & I’m sure they drive past on their way home. Do they stop & pick it up, NO. It will lay there for days until someone decides to move it off of the road. RESPONSIBLE? , I think not!
Please stop and pick up the part of your load that you lost on 10th St on your way to the dump site, instead of having everyone have to drive around it. RESPONSIBILITY?
Oh sorry that’s something that you don’t need to have in this day & age!
It is a real bummer that the high school PE this summer that the kids will not be doing canoeing this year. That was one of the reasons I signed him up for summer school.
I’m saddened and disappointed by the actions of our Supreme Court. An abortion should be a personal, private decision between a woman and her doctor, not the rulings of the government.
I have always admired State Rep. Charlie Meier. He is an advocate for the average citizen. He understands what families are facing especially the farmers. He was never what I would describe as a “suit in a glass tower looking down on the people.” But yesterday I unfortunately changed my mind. Meier turned his back on women and their rights by applauding the u.s. supreme courts decision to make abortion illegal. I hope women in our district remember that at election time.
The Supreme Court did NOT make abortion illegal, YOU IDIOT!
i imagine a lot of guys are for abortion, after all it would be a lot cheaper to pay for an abortion than take responsibility of raising a child, then they could just move on to the next
True, but men have no say so what happens to the child so women need to be more responsible on who they have random sex with.
You said it best “not the rulings of the government “. So the government got out of the abortion business. Too bad that the baby has no say in the matter. Otherwise it might say “don’t kill me mom”.
Even if the baby was conceived by rape?
We’re not talking about babies. These are fetuses and zygotes that couldn’t survive outside the womb anyway. If it was the third trimester you would’ve had a point, but surely the mother would’ve made a decision before then.
Not even the whole government, just the federal government. Which, is the way it should be, if one has read the Constitution. All it means is that states can decide on their own abortion laws. For all the pro-choice people out there, don’t worry, Illinois will still be the abortion capital of the country. It’s Governor Pritzker’s economic recovery plan!
Everyone getting emotional when the fact is, they will still be easily available in some States.
Your concern about womens’ rights is so touching. And yes, that was sarcasm. There is nothing easy about this. Not about the issue that a right was overturned or a decision made by a woman regarding her own life. IF one right is overturned, aren’t you worried that other rights will be too?
Now you understand why changing gun rights has the same problem.
I’ll say it… “pro-life” is a lie. These people could care less whether women live or die, and the same goes for their children once they are brought into this travesty of a world.
So true, funny how conservatives are pro life but, when they get into the world they could care less if they have a hard time with life.
All that happened here is that a Nation wide law was deemed unconstitutional, and pushed back to to individual States to determine their legality. What’s the problem with that? Our constitution is being maintained which is what our Supreme Court is supposed to do. States that currently do not allow killing of the unborn can do what we’ve always done. Elect officials that will represent our values (or lack of them) and institute laws that we want on the books.
You mean “what THEY want on the books.” We no longer have a say so in the matter.
Like the comment stated, THEY are the elected officials that you voted in to represent the majority of the voters. So if you didn’t vote for THEY, then move if you don’t like it.
Funny how liberals (socialist) is ok with letting the government bail them out when times get tough but, don’t like it when they decide if you can kill babies or let them live.
Charlie Meier, Mary Miller, and Darren Bailey have no problem accepting farm subsidy payments. Isn’t that socialism?
Same with the so-called disabled veterans not paying property taxes?
Both are entitlement programs paid for by all.
I didn’t know they were the only one that were receiving that payment. I guess the rest of the farming community doesn’t receive any of that kind of payment.
I’m a male. A group of mostly old male legislators making rules for women only, makes no sense.
If you can find in the constitution that killing an unborn is legal. Then I’ll support abortion….maybe
The ruling just means it will be left up to the states to determine which way they want to go,abortions will still be available, heck the government is even advocating for abortion pills, women can do it at home, from what i’ve read about the pills, not so encouraging, but i guess that’s a private matter also, bottom line, if the baby is dead, that’s the goal, right?
Supreme Court just followed the constitution. Congress can pass a law allowing abortion. Congress should make laws not the courts
Is it common practice for Mascoutah auto repair shops to charge an hour “diagnostic” fee when getting car repair done? This is new to me, I’ve never been charged for the diagnostic before. And these are no out of the ordinary repairs. I noticed this additional fee just started popping up on my last two invoices. It adds up to $60 to my bill … hmmmm
Never heard of that. But then I don’t let anyone in Mascoutah work on my car.
I would think most charge the fee. Think about it when a repairman comes to your house to fix anA/C plumbing electrical issue. You get charged for their time. Maybe the repair shop is being up front by listing the charge instead of including it in the overall invoice. Just a thought. The negativity on this site serves no one.
That has become common in almost repair shops where the mechanic gets paid by the time guide published in the labor time guide, factory Warrantee or Labor Guide. So to account for the lack of automotive Chrystal balls that tell you exactly which part to replace, there needs to be an allowance for the mechanics time to diagnose the problem. Not any different than getting an ex ray or MRI, you get charged for each of them, diagnostic procedure. Or a consultant fee. Would you prefer to pay for parts & labor until the issue is resolved or pay only for what is needed to make the proper repair.
You decide.
Thanks to the City Line Crew!! Lost power around 6:30 am on Sunday and it was restored in little more than an hour. This is commendable and shows dedication to the City and its residents! Thank you so much!
That is their job.
Just trying to give thanks to people that deserve it, but there always seems to be negative comments by some jack-a**!
I must not get all the comments, I don’t see a negative comment. What was said???
everyone who works are doing their job. its what they get paid to do. dont forget the guy hauling your gas or the guy growing your food or the lady cooking your meal.
That was the negative comment?? Someone needs go get out of the house and get a job and join the rest of us.
City employees are a joke, I actually followed one of the city trucks around last week when it was hot outside, they only made one stop in a hour, that was for a soda at the moto mart. So dont tell me how hard they work. Its been like this for years.
Its there job, that’s why we pay taxes, to pay there salary, don’t thank them, they waste a lot of time everyday riding around doing nothing.
Totally agree, if they don’t do it, they should be replaced.
I hear that many teachers are leaving the Mascoutah School District. Some say there’s poor leadership at some of our schools. Seems there’s low morale. And it sure is easy to leave when you can go to the next town over and earn more. I see no reason why our teachers shouldn’t be paid just as much or more as surrounding districts. It’s no secret that our district has plenty of money. We sure pay enough taxes to it. We should be hiring and retaining great teachers and treating them and paying them well!
I don’t think pay is the problem. I believe many of the teachers have lost their love for the administration and associated bureaucracy. Any that are close to retirement are headed for the door if they can afford to. Moronic parents, disrespectful kids, who in their right mind would want to be a teacher now a days. I can only assume you vote blue judging by the solution you suggest……just throw more money at it, don’t search for the root cause of the issue.
Another typical one sided comment. You came out with good facts until your close minded vote blue comment.
It’s true though. Spending more money has not fixed the issues with this country
Entitled parents and their spoiled kids have existed for as long as our civilization existed, but sure, blame the Democrats. That’s what you’re best at, huh?
Side comment , there was a family saying they couldn’t afford Mascoutah’s tuition. Then someone commented about how much we pay in taxes should cover it. Agree, if we didn’t have laws allowing 40-50 percent of vets, as we call now “welfare vets” contributing, then it would improve all of our lives. People are being woken by the abuse of our laws. Next time you see a plate that says “I Served” – “Disabled Vet”, realize your looking at the white collar welfare program. Prayers to the men and women hopefully getting help that truly need it.
We waited all year for the pool to open and for what? To have teenagers acting like brats, pushing and shoving people, using foul language. The lifeguards are not doing anything and of course none of the teens’ parents are around. This is ridiculous.
That is why we go to the New Baden pool.
We go to Freeburg. Way better pool then Mascoutah.
Watch out primary voters. A real self serving RINO, in bed with the Belleville crooks, is running as a Republican in district 21. You’ve been warned.
Just to be clear. That is county board district 21.
Let the Reps have a chance for awhile. The libs have padded there retirement enough.
It starts with the parents. They need to raise their children to respect others.
There are some kids that get carried away with splashing and being stupid, but I was more shocked at the way the teenage girls were dressed! I’m not a prude but these girls barely had anything on! Where are THEIR parents?
And what pool was this??
Maybe address with the city probably better choice than ranting on here
Sooooo, build your own pool. Most of you are renters anyway, & do not pay property taxes, so I don’t want to hear your whining.
Haha & they probably don’t vote either
I put in a pool when I rented, but when I bought a house I couldn’t take it with me. Soooo your comment is pretty stupid.
But did you drown? No? Good, then the lifeguards are doing their job. They are “life” guards, not babysitters.
Is it true that we will not have a Miss Mascoutah Homecoming Queen this year? Has that ever happened before?
Thanks Obama
True if no one runs. Kids these days don’t want to work
Although I can’t believe gas is over $5 a gallon, I really don’t understand why Casey’s is $5.29 and Moto is $5.20. Why the big price difference?
Really????
last week i noticed 3 different times trcks and a car blew right thru the stop sign at railway and main going east bound It would appear that the tree by city parking lot is blocking the view of the stop sign
Why would a father tell his 15 year old son that he will never be good at baseball? The boy just wants to have fun this summer with his friends and play recreational baseball.
Let boys be boys. Unreal. So sad.
Maybe the father can’t afford to drive him around to all the games since gas is over 5 bucks.
That is not the issue in this case.
June 3, 2022: After today, gas prices have gone up $2.71 a gallon since the current administration took office. Rumor has it the Seven Eleven Convenience Stores are doing away with the Marquee and charging everyone $7.11 a gallon in anticipation of future prices.
this administration wants high fuel prices to push people for electric, only problem is no one in the administration was or is smart enough to figure out that high fuel prices will lead to massive inflation which it has, they act like we can convert to electric at the flip of a switch, that’s the reason biden waged war on the oil companies first day in office,he said he would do it when campaigning and people still voted for him, unbelievable,i know i’ll get bashed for this post but i would rather put up with a lot of stupid tweets and have enough money for gas, food and bills
I’m not bashing your comment. I think you’re 100% correct!
most gas taxes go to fix the roads n bridges. The more electric vehicles on the roads equals less gas tax collected. Sooooo how are we gonna get road repairs if everyone goes electric
I am wondering what the plan is to make EV work. Lithium prices are up 500% since the administration took office and there is a world wide shortage of lithium.
I believe Illinois will do what a few other states have done. If you own an Electric Vehicle, your registration is raised to $300-$400 per year.
Fixing roads and bridges?? just like making lottery legal and the money would go to education??
Ha,most gas taxes in this state goes for more “rough road”signs
Could you please explain, if the current administration is behind the increase of gas prices in Illinois or even America. What explains the high prices across the globe? Did Biden contact the rest of the world and say hey I really want to put the screws to the American people, so lets everyone raise the prices at the same time.
Norway – $6.27
Uk – $5.79
Germany – $5.57
France – $5.54
Japan – $4.24
Only the trump cult followers thing Biden is the fault of the high gas prices.
Again, list the things that Biden has done to help the country, waiting,c’mon man we want to hear!!!!,don’t be one of bidens dog faced pony soldiers
Biden has done nothing. Trump has done nothing except lie, and letting us all know how great his thinks he is. So trump is still more of a D-bag then Biden. lol and what’s a pony soldier ??
Where in this thread did anyone say gas prices were high?
Have a reading problem???
I am sorry, I do not have a reading problem. I am looking over this thread again and I see no mention of anyone saying gas prices are high. I see a post which says the administration wants “high fuel prices.” I am more than willing to accept your point of view but I am struggling to see the facts.
With our Mascoutah property values (homes) up 20% recently will our property taxes also go up 20% in the coming year? Just wondering …
Not sure if it would be 20% but, it will go up with the growth of the town. Most of everyone’s taxes are going to the school. No wonder there’s a pile of resume’s trying to get a job in this school dist. The pay is out of control.
My wife and I are only a few years from retirement. I can’t wait to sell our Mascoutah real estate so more “IS” people with sleep apnea can buy them. Will the last real estate tax payer please turn out the lights?
Property taxes will continue to increase with the assessed value, yes. The incremental rates from each taxing body may not change, though. The ultimate result of how much one pays will be subjective to their particular property owned.
Twenty years ago my total tax bill was $1760. Now it’s $3100 and $1800 of that goes to the school district. I can see why the district has millions in cash reserves.
More than half of our taxes go to the school district. Are they really being conservative in spending our money? I don’t think so! This district is the worst when it comes to spending.
yes they are they spent our dist 19 tax money to build a school in shiloh city limits i just cant understand their thinking
IIRC Shiloh funded that school.
It is in the Mascoutah School District, just like the one at SAFB.
There has been a Scott Elementary School as far back as I can remember.
You put schools where the children are.
Won’t impact a very large percentage of citizens that have licensed plates reading IS (I Served) Disabled. State needs to change the rules asap and help those that are truly handicap/disabled.
The state needs to make changes immediately. The taxes are one thing BUT to have our military abuse the system is a whole different situation. I’m all for the ones that are truly disabled but the ones that say they are 100% disable but continue to mow their grass, go to the gym and work a regular full-time job obviously aren’t disabled!!
Paralyzed from waste down and still mow my lawn with a zero turn mower, but I guess I’m not disabled tho. Some people just aren’t happy, nothing we can do to change that. We fought so they have the right to be an aragant. God bless america.
I give you the respect that you deserve. Thank you for your sacrifice. The problem is that so many non-disabled abuse the breaks that you all should get. It makes all vets look bad. No issues with you, but taxes are bad/high and many of us feel your fellow service people are taking advantage of the system. Maybe you should be calling them out. We’re tired of paying for all the freeloaders….and just being in the service doesn’t get you a free pass!
You are disabled and should be taken care of.. its the ones that didn’t do anything but signed up because they didn’t have a choice and now they are reaping. Not their fault, its the stats. BTW, if you are paralyzed waste down and that happened due to serving, put your address on here and I will come mow your lawn for free! Thank you for your service.. maybe some of your brothers and sisters that aren’t truly disabled like you can help out as well.
Ask a Veteran.. look up their last name in the st. clair county taxes and 9/10 they claim disability. Don’t pay any real estate taxes, get $3-4k a month and kids get to go to any college they want for free. It is a real shame what it is doing to our state. We should be focused on real disabled, not buy a vote disabled. Start looking around at license plates, IS (I served) and disabled, usually they are pretty darn nice cars, which you are paying for!
Thank you to those responsible for putting on the Chamber of Commerce hosted Springfest. It has to be a big job to set up and take down. I believe this event, like the Homecoming in August, is set up and staffed with volunteer workers. If you missed this event, you missed some good food, cold beer and rockin’ band! The only thing missing is something for middle aged kids to participate in. Too young for childrens games and bouncy houses, and not old enough for a bags tournament. Anyone have suggestions that can be passed along to the Chamber for next year? Great job everyone!
Used to have a 3v3 youth basketball tournament in front of daubers
As always, need someone to step up and organize. I would, but don’t do sports. Come on Mascoutah jocks!
But you sound like an athletic supporter!
Kudos to the Mayor & Chamber. Decent folk.
Four Ameren Electric trucks on Saturday with six workers showed up to the County Road downed line within 45 minutes. Just saying…….The previous Mayors main argument for city owned electric, was that city workers respond quickly. Comical. Furthermore, even more comical, is how they contract out these private electric companies to do the upgrades & installs recently on Route 4 & Fuesser. But yet, the City has workers, trucks, & equipment to do these jobs. Anybody else seeing this?
I saw a bunch of Mascoutah linesmen hustling all night and into the day repairing downed lines. I’m grateful for them. May God protect them and all first responders as they are at the ready and in town on a night like that.
they chose that occupation.
Why aren’t they burying the lines? That’s what the modern real world does. It is 2022 by the way. This town loves tacky poles.
Think about how ” not thought out ” your comment is.
you must be the guy who doesnt think we need a center turn lane on rt 4north of town and by the boeing plant
Lol the Boeing plant? You want to turn into a field?
People complain rates are high now just think if spent millions more on burying lines
Wish the city would sell to Ameren
Yup you are in the majority
All you people wanting to switch to Ameren should look to put a referendum on that ballot in November election that way the council sees how the majority feels
The town can’t switch to Ameren even if we wanted to. Blame the idiots back in the 60’s for this.
Are you sure the city can’t switch? I bet the can once currently deals are over
Naw you are. Keep dreaming
We are going to see a FIVE in front of unleaded gas prices in the next seven to ten days. I am so happy we won’t here any complaining in regards to fuel costs since numerous folks sit in lines at the drive thru instead of walking inside.
I am a bit dumbfounded by all of the complaining about higher energy costs, food costs etc. I think we need to harken back to November of 2020 when 57 plus percent of the population of Illinois voted for this. My burning question to the individuals who are pro Electric Vehicles is this. Why is it okay to mine for lithium and destroy the environment when drilling for oil is taboo?
Funny no one can give you a answer on your comment. I wonder how many people vote liberal and have no idea what they stand for. Well, you know now.
6 by July. Good job Joe & JB!
VETERANS Take a drive on Summerfield road and notice the house with the AMERICAN FLAG flying upside down , it looks like a sign of anti American to VETERANS
I bet they liked America when the stimulus checks arrived , check after check , and then the food stamps started arriving in the mail ,America was a great place then wasn’t it .
As a VETERAN I fought for their rights to do this ,but don’t slap America in the face with one hand and put the other hand out for all the free stuff your can get from her .
I thought an American flag upside down is a distress signal, not an anti American sentiment.
The upside down flag means in distress not Anti-American. Please do not spread lies. You are part of the problem.
It seems anti-American to me.
And yet Trump flags and CSA (Traitor) flags are just free speech, right?
Free speech also covers BLM and KKK flags.
Anti-America is a Vet using the system to not contribute to society anymore, by getting paid each month and trying to be a hero in the publics eyes. Just cause you can use the system, doesn’t mean you should. I blame our politicians that gave those vets the ability to use the tax payers. Now if they are disabled and/or really served in war, then lets take care of them. BTW the person that said they are a vet and doesn’t know what an upside down flag means, smh.
Covid is on the raise at the high school. Glad my kids are boosted and wear masks.
Is this seriously still a thing? I thought our Supreme Leader snapped his fingers and it went away on some random Tuesday.
I feel sorry for your kids if they are vaccinated, boosted, and wear masks. Must have miserable parents.
They chose to wear the masks. Parents had nothing to do with it. The want to keep others safe, unlike you.
Lmao
Hello Residents of Mascoutah, many of us have had the privilege of enjoying the Mascoutah Homecoming. Our community is in danger of losing this event due to the lack of individuals wanting to contribute. The Mascoutah Improvement Association has donated thousands of hours to make Scheve Park the treasure it is. The core group of individuals who are great custodians to The Mascoutah Homecoming, The Mascoutah Improvement Association, and Scheve Park need help from some of our younger residents. If you have the time, or a group of individuals have the time please reach out to the Mascoutah Improvement Association. Our city is just a few short years away from losing the Mascoutah Homecoming and ESPECIALLY the Tractor Pull. The gentleman who has taken care of the Tractor Pull needs our help and needs it now. Thank you to all of the individuals and organizations who donate their time and energy to making our city a better place.
How do you sign up?
No one really went to the tractor pull these days anyway. Time to get up with the time.
I just would like to know what homecoming you go to because the farm side is always crowded. The food stands and beer stand is always busy.
I’ve been going for a while to the homecoming (and I do not live in Mascoutah). The crowds are always big (other than bad weather). I do agree that MIA does need younger volunteers. But I don’t see the homecoming going away. It is one of the last few good homecomings there are around.
I’m not sure if you are trying to assess the crowd from across the street, or across town, but somehow your view seems to have been skewed because there are always people gathered around to watch the pulls. They may not choose to sit in the stands, but you will find people gathered around the fence every night, eyes glued to the track as they carry on conversations, catching up with old friends and making new ones. Perhaps if you think the pulls are not, “…up with the time”, you should look at the number of kids and teens gathered around to watch. There are plenty of our younger generation, my teenage daughter included, that love watching the pulls. One of the reasons Mascoutah Homecoming continues to be among the most popular festivals and why so many people come back “HOME” each year is that the MIA has always kept it true to the roots of Mascoutah. If you don’t enjoy the pulls, or feel like they are outdated, feel free not to watch. You’re certainly not going to hurt anyone’s feelings. The rest of us will continue to share, with current and future generations, the appreciation for pulls and other activities you probably consider not “up with the time”, just as previous generations shared with us.
I am sad to see the Dog and Suds come down. My grandmother was the first manager of the store. I see it in the Remember the days gone section when her and my grandfather travel to a location for training.
Where was the Dog and Suds? Been here 25 years and have never heard of it.
What building was just demolished?? Dog N Suds. geez
Best Root beer back then.
A while ago, someone asked for ideas on how to attract more business to Mascoutah. I think we should look to zoning reform as a possible solution. Local zoning laws are what prevents business from coming to many suburban areas. Those nice buildings along Main Street where there’s a shop of some sort and some apartments on the upper floor? We couldn’t build more of those today because of our current, nonsensical zoning laws. Are we really gonna just build subdivisions and strip malls up to the interstate, or are we gonna get smarter about urban design?
Don’t get ahead of yourself. The town has to grow before we worry about expanding. Very few from the base move to Mascoutah. Other then that not many want to move to this town. It’s only grown 4,000 people since the 70’s .
Seeing as how we’re roughly 10k strong now, that’s quite a jump in 50 years. We’re growing fast, believe it or not.
We are only close to 9,000 now. We were over 5,000 in 1970. An increase of only about 4,000 in 52 years is not a very big increase.
Ignorant. Idiotic. Dumb. Blurred vision.
lol having a problem with math are we???
Maybe the math is off but it does raise a valid point about how Mascoutah will grow and grow sustainably in the coming years. Boeing coming in has the potential of changing both the economic and social landscape of Mascoutah very soon. What are we doing to accept the good and reject the bad of that growth?
Boeing will have little impact on Mascoutah, other than increasing the cost to live in Mascoutah. Mascoutah might get a handful of Boeing employees living here. There might be offspring businesses to support Boeing . Manufacturing doesn’t pay sales taxes . Warehouses don’t pay sales taxes .
No one working at Boeing will live in a county that pays taxes close to what Cook county has. Being right off of 64, New Baden may grow fast.
Their adding 150 jobs. Not 5000. Will be very little impact.
How is the math off?
What is wrong with the math
4K growth in 50 years = 4k growth not 10k growth in 50 years. Unless common core math is used, then maybe . :O)
Can we just get curbs. It helps with the curb appeal thing.
I was watching the soccer games after school on Monday. During the games the boys track team was practicing. The young men were not wearing shirts. When I was in high school years ago the young men were not able to practice without shirts. Times are changing. Boys can go shirtless at practice but girls can not wear short shorts or show rheir stomachs. I believe that is a double standard. Ok for boys not ok for girls.
We must be in good shape if this is what is being complained about
Why does everything have to be okay for everybody? That’s exactly what is wrong with our society. The media, the liberals, the president and his administration. They are all soft and have to try and make everyone happy. When majority of us don’t give a sh*t and work our butt’s off, just to have people like you complain about fairness. Take your fairness and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.
Must be men to respond. It is a double standard on the female side
Agreed, we need a leader that lie’s to us and loves himself. And does nothing for the country except take credit for what ever good happens. Oh yeah, this person needs to have orange skin and a cult leader.
As always,I would love to hear how your life is better with this administration that is in charge, but then again maybe you like 40 plus year high inflation, open border, free phones, medical, housing, education, and so on for illegals while hard working Americans struggle because of inflation,or maybe you like no bail reform which puts criminals back on the streets if they can’t afford bail,i could go on but i would rather put up with some bad tweets and get back where we was
No reasonable thinking Democrat can possibly believe that our President is doing our country well and I’m a Democrat that voted for him
Sounds like the one we have in the White House now. Minus the orange skin.
Right? Who cares about anyone else as long as you got yours?
Nothing shouts “Responsibility” like the Mascoutah school bus driver talking on his phone while driving through town on Main Street. At least the bus was empty, but he should know better.
Does anyone know if there is a new junkyard on South Railway Street on the edge of Mascoutah? Are they open to the public?
Let me guess…..You have never talked on the phone while driving a vehicle?
That isn’t the point. When you are hired and being paid by the public, at least you should follow the laws.
No!!! I myself never have driven while on my cellphone & I never will. Despite it being unlawful, it is dangerous to other drivers and yourself!! Why would anyone think it’s ok? With the way drivers are today it’s best for all to be a defensive driver. Eyes on the road, no distractions other than paying attention to the road, other drivers & what is going on around us to help prevent accidents. Wouldn’t you rather be safe than sorry??
I have a question. There are a lot of homes that are putting items in their front yard with a “free take it” sign. I think that is nice. It keeps stuff from the dump sites. But what happens if a child rides his bike to his house, lays the bike down by the items, and goes in his house? The bike is taken. Has that bike technically been stolen?
Don’t put the bike there. Good life lesson
The internet in Mascoutah is pathetic. 25 years living all over the world, and this is the worst I’ve ever encountered.
Move back to a base then, or your hometown.
What company? Has nothing to do with mascoutah but the provider
yes, please leave, you probably aren’t contributing much anyways, BYE FELICA!
Probably another Karen……some officers wife. Keyboard warrior.
Don’t get me going on veterans, my lord. Too many veterans have turned the VA into the new welfare. It is a disgrace what they allow. Join the air force, never see battle and then live off society after 20 years, while running around feeling entitled. I hope those that really need help are getting it. As a retired Army officer, moved to mascoutah, i have never heard so much entitlement. I apologize to all non-veterans for those taking advantage of every loop hole. Obviously, its our politicians fault for allowing them to have these opportunties.
What are you talking about. My cable been running since 1998. Minus tornado’s and no brain drivers .
Is the city having a citywide garage sale? or is it cancelled. I didn’t see any ads about it at all. Nothing in the Herald, no signs, nothing. Can’t they at least let everyone know. Not everyone looks at Facebook.
Glad it’s over. Brings riff raff to town. And speeders. And other convicts. I leave for the day
Define “riff raff.”
I seen a lot of garage sales. You can have one anytime. You don’t need the whole city to have one if you want one . Facebooks slowly going down the tubes, so the city should figure out how to let everyone know. Or don’t.
I see this on Facebook “Pat McMahan invited you”, to “event by Pat McMahan” and we should “meet your host Pat McMahan”. I thought Springfest was sponsored by the Mascoutah Chamber of Commerce.
What diffence whose Facebook page it is on as long as the word gets out and we can enjoy an evening with friends and music and food. I don’t care if it is sponsored by the Wicked Witches of the Midwest.
that’s marketing, keeping his name relevant. He will be out in the near future.
He’s volunteering his time for these events. What are YOU doing for this city?
I agree. He works tirelessly for Mascoutah. I’d bet if someone else forwarded you the Facebook post it would say they invited you. I don’t see this as a problem the mayor has to respond to. Have a good time at the event
He’s a longtime chamber member that ran springfest
I would like to say THANK YOU to the Mascoutah Police Department for its recent crackdown for individuals speeding on Jefferson Street/Route 4. I would also like to say THANK YOU for cracking down on individuals driving while on their electronic device. We appreciate each and everyone of you at the Police Department keeping our community safe.
I agree. I have witnessed several drivers going over the posted speed limit between Laugh and Learn and Dollar General. My permit drivers was driving home after the Band Concert and was almost hit by a driver weaving in and out of traffic on Route 4.
Has there been any update to the lawsuit against the previous City Manager? Did they find him guilty of anything or is the jury still out?
That would be nice to know. Is he even still around?
I think somebody said, he is going to run for Mayor or Councilmen.
I thought he moved to another state to be a city manager there?
He ended up not getting the job because people from the Mayors office called his future employer!!! That is completely wrong!!! Shame on the Mayor!!
All you have to do is Google his name, and the articles written by the Herald about his firing pop up. Why should the mayor’s office call anyone? They could care less. Don’t spread lies when you don’t know the facts.
Any background search would turn up the articles about him here and at his previous city as well. You can’t blame the mayor for this one….maybe he didn’t disclose any of it? Or, maybe the new potential employer did their due diligence to thoroughly vet him. Can’t blame anyone but himself for those issues.
Myers was the one that was terminated and it was in the paper. Anyone can look that information up. How is this even close to the mayors fault? Maybe he should take responsibility for his own actions and quit trying to blame others. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to google someone’s name.
Proof? Or just another keyboard warrior spreading lies
Are you sure they aren’t talking about Mike Baker? He moved back.
Fast forward a couple years, we’ll be talking about another bites the dust hahaha
I saw where Ameren rates are going to raise as much as $40 per customer to accommodate for the raising cost of electricity. Wonder if we will be headed for another increase next year? I guess $6 is better than $40. I retract earlier comments about the council raising rates.
Your anonymous retraction to your anonymous complaints are anonymously noted.
Ameren still cheaper
For sure. Most of Ameren increase looks to be supply costs which I assume would hit Mascoutah too
Thats 40.00 per year not 72
I want to try to attend one of these council meetings. Americans like to blame Washington for their problems but more often the most oppressive politicians are your own neighbors and the local city government. On the other hand, it’s also the one place where anyone has the opportunity to make changes that could have an effect on their daily lives.
Oppressive? That is a strong word. Dust off the dictionary for that one?
Why does the City of Mascoutah think everyone has Facebook or follows them on Facebook. They seem to feel this is appropriate way to get out important information. They posted late in the day on Tuesday, April 26th about water line flushing in Indian Prairie subdivision the next morning. Since we did not get that message we ran a lot of hot water before we realize this situation. If the city has a call system for letting the city residents know about snow removal, can’t same system be used for other important information homeowners might want to know. Very inconsiderate of the City!
Mascoutah Khorey League did the same thing a couple of days ago.
Completely agree…very inconsiderate of city management. I don’t use Facebook; never have- ever! Why the city didn’t use the existing call system for this water outage, and the outage on Sunday, 2 May in Hunter’s Creek neighborhood, is very hard to understand. Ever since this new mayor and new council has been in power, many social activities and public services in the city have turned for the worse! I believe it is a result of personal apathy and general mismanagement, by those “in charge.”
There was a call placed by the City at 9:33pm Sunday night about the water main break. What else do you want? Should the Council and Mayor knock on your door to tell you personally? Maybe the police should? Or, maybe we need the local town crier to walk the streets wearing a sandwich board?
No call from the city received here last Sunday at any time. And, that is assuming your info is true! What is true, is that I know the city has my phone number…not sure about that town crier though.
The info is true. What is also true is that the City has an alert system you can sign up for. Check their website.
Because City Hall workers check Facebook twenty times a day while not on break, and they are brainwashed
How come the ball fields are never open after a slight bit of rain? Mascoutah has some of the best fields around when it comes to drying out, and we’ve had nonstop closures this season. The city used to have people that would prep the fields and could turn them around after rain. Is it a labor shortage or does the city just not care?
The last council meeting packets said they city spent $24k on a “ballfield groomer”. What’s the point of some fancy equipment if they won’t work the fields? Was this to replace an employee having to do it and the machine can’t handle a little moisture? Seems like a huge waste.
$24k for a piece of equipment that doesn’t get used since it’s easier to say “we are closed”?
Not a good start for the new City Manager
She doesn’t start her job until May 1.
Right–what does the ball field equipment have to do with the new City Manager?
Remembering Days Gone By in the paper this week 1972 the city manager got a raise of $800.00 to earn $16800.00 what is the the new person salary are they really worth it
If you’re that interested and concerned, try attending a meeting. The details have been disclosed.
$110,000
Not to bad of money for 1972
This isn’t the nee city manager. She hasn’t started yet. This is our interim city manager.
well there was a water main break May 1,guess you can start bashing her for her role in the break or people can blame city management for not knowing that the line was going to break and giving folks a heads up so they could store water, not sure what would happen if a real catastrophe struck
The city of Mascoutah has a documented history of having water main breaks every 2-3 years. Check your city’s history. Guess what, there will be another water main break in about 2-3 years. Doesn’t take a genius to deduce that this cycle of events will continue until the remaining, antiquated pipes are replaced. I’ll have to attend a city council meeting to legitimately figure out (i.e. to officially be informed of) what that project plan is, if a plan exists. But of course, I won’t (attend).
I think the khoury league used to maintain and now the city does. It seems the city won’t work the fields if will take any work at all. I don’t get why cancel games at noon when the sun is out.
Because the city doesn’t want to make their people work. It’s easier to close them down.
This is the first year in a long time it’s been this bad all around. Scheduling, correspondence with city hall, maintenance, everything. It’s a shame because the fields being a lot of people to town when they are in use for games and tournaments.
Why don’t one of you volunteer to get the fields ready instead of whinning about it. There should be a age limit on who can post.
The city doesn’t want anyone else working on the fields anymore. there are several organizations in and out of town that have assisted with maintaining the fields in the past, but this year have been told that nobody besides a city worker can prep them.
If the city closes them, how can a volunteer work them? They are closed.
Speaking for one of the organizations here in town. Madelyn at City Hall is a welcomed addition and has been a pleasure to work with. She always tries to accommodate all parties.
That has nothing to do with the fields being worked to play on. Can schedule all you want but if won’t work the fields then what?
The City Clerks son is the Parks Foreman. Typical.
So what? He does a good job
Apparently not. Guess you can’t read above. Haha
He’s supposed to control the rain?
The fields are built to be able to be playable after rain. It takes work and prep. There have been organizations that have volunteered time and money over the years to make them drain better, but it’s the lack of proper preparation that’s the issue. It’s easier to close them at noon and be done with it than actually work them to provide a service to those who use them. There was no reason last night should have had them closed due to wet conditions.
Did any of you go to park yesterday and look at the fields or just read about this on Facebook? Have any of you complaining tried to get a field ready with standing water on it? Also as for the foreman of the park I believe he has a sports management degree, so he probably knows a lot more than those of you.
We need to understand regardless of who he’s related to he’s well qualified for the job the problem is he’s in the process of getting all the parks open with the help of 1 other city employee. Has for the new piece of equipment it’s new to them they have to get it figured out plus the fact we’ve had a lot of rain plus the 2 employees also take care of city building maintenance
It’ll be OK sunshine. Your kid will still get a ribbon for participating, despite the fields being closed one day because it rained.
I would like to say thank you to the woman in the black SUV heading out of town for riding my a$$ on Route 4. Remember the speed limit is 30, then 35, then 55 past Dollar General. I hope you got stopped by the train heading to Interstate 64.
Happens to me all of the time. Many times they pass me and get stopped at the light. Karma!!!!
What would Johnny Depp do?
Agreed. Whether it’s on 4, Main, or Harnett, I could be going 5 over the limit and there’d still be someone in his truck sniffing my tailpipe. Driving can be such a chore in this town
It’s not just this town. It’s the whole mid-west style of driving.
It’s really not just the midwest. Driving in the U.S. drivers seem to be in such a hurry, they become rude unfortunately. I’ve lived in Texas where speed limit is 75 on highways, so people go 90 or more. California, Oregon and Washington state have their fair share of rude, dangerous drivers. In Fall River & Boston Massachusetts it’s drive at your own risk. Paying attention & being considerate of other drivers should be the norm.
And don’t get me started on California drivers. They make their own rules (drivers) like the ‘California stop’ it’s crazy out there!!
Colorado has the most considerate people I’ve ever seen. You put your turn signal on to change lanes, they actually wait for you to get in the other lane. Someone going slower then the speed limit hauling a load, they actually pull over if more when 4 cars are lining up behind them. Must be the weed turning them into nice people.
I expected to see or hear outrage about the increase in utility rates. But all I hear is crickets. Does everyone now believe that increases are the norm and just accept them with not even a whimper? Thank you Councilman Battas for at least trying. I hope we don’t forget your efforts.
Next election, they lose my vote.
They definitely will not get my vote in the future. Battas is the only one. He listened to the voters. The poll on this website said 90% of the people did not want a rate increase. Why did the mayor and other councilmen vote against the wishes of the people. Shame on them!
What good does complaining about it do? Besides it’s not the councils fault that everything costs a little more and they need to raise the rates. Just listen to our Nations current Administration, it’s Putin’s fault! Get used to the high rates, we are going to see them for many years to come. The votes you cast really do have an impact on your lives, don’t they?
Re- election move by Battas, if you watched online you would of heard him proclaim how much these increases were necessary prior to voting “No”. But hey, it will be on record as a no after he endorsed it adding a expiration date to the raise.
If you were listening to what Battas had to say he probably voted No because they wouldn’t guarantee that they would have an expiration date. It was said that they could look at that when the time comes but we all know the time never comes means another increase!!!
I’ve known Wally for a long time he could care less about getting Re Elected
If you know he could care less to be reelected, maybe he cares less about doing the job he was voted in to do then.
But yet he voted against the majority apparently because he felt that was the right thing. I think what the OP meant was that he doesnt vote the way he thinks will get him reelected but rather how he actually thinks on the issue. Just a guess tho
What’s wrong with explaining your vote, regardless of what the vote is?
Well you voted to put mostly liberals into office this is what you get. Stop whinning about something most of you voted for.
I thought the City Council is non-partisan
To the new City Manager…Welcome. Buckle your seat belt. It’s going to be a heck of a ride.
Yeah probably because of people like you.
Over or Under 3 years?
I’m excited about the hiring of a well qualified city manager.Just hoping that she can see the problems with personal at city hall, and to clean house if need be to get rid of the dead weight and to make sure all city employees understand that they work with taxpayers money, and should be held accountable. Some of them think that they can’t be replaced.
Agreed. Terrible, disrespectful attitudes of underqualified people in administration roles. Time to go.
Enough with “my taxes pay your salary” BS. Did you ever think that those people you comment about pay taxes also to pay there salaries. So they get taxed so it can pay there own salary. Seems to me they’re actually getting screwed .
The comment did not say “my taxes pay your salary” The comment stated that “to make sure all city employees understand that they work with taxpayers money”
Taxes do contribute to their salary though, along with electric and water/sewer dept rates. My hope would be a new city manager can trim expenses/rates/taxes to the residents, including the city employees who do live in town. If that means getting rid of employees who do not perform the job they are hired to do then so be it.
Thank you councilman Battas for listening to us. it may not have stopped the increase, but at least you tried.
Battas is our hero!!!! I wish all politicans would listen to the voters.
I think Kevin Dawson would make a great State Representative.
He already is a great guy, and add State Rep to it.
I believe Dawson will represent everyone well in the 114 district. He’s not afraid to speak up he’s the kind of guy that can talk to anyone.
I would ask for the great citizens of this town to start a go fund me to help fix 6th street, but then we wouldn’t be able to pay our electric bills and property taxes.
GO FUND ME? Are folk’s aware of the amount that is taken off of the top of the donations and then are charged a fee each time there is a withdrawal from the account?
RIPOFF?
Are cars expected to stop for trail users crossing 6th north of the park? Asking for a friend.
Tell your friend, yes.
Trail users???
You see a person trying to cross the street then yes, the normal, decent thing to do would be to stop and let them cross.
Right. I’m not sure why this is a question.
If traveling south down 6th, the street widens to two lanes right before crosswalk creating great potential for a bad situation. As one car traveling south signals to a pedestrian to cross, a second car might be traveling behind first car at legal speed, switch lanes not see the pedestrian. I have seen this often. Kids can’t see over a car signaling them to cross. I ask for safety. Perhaps the city wants to consider “ in street” signage. Slowing traffic sooner. More obvious signage prior. Community education. Increased policing. Widen road after crosswalk. There is inconsistency amongst you fine citizens. only you can prevent speed bumps.
I almost got hit several times at that location by a full size black Chevy pickup with blacked out windows and a gray sedan. They increased their speed even though I was in the middle of the walkway. Yes they should stop for all pedestrians.
If a car is coming to this area at 30 mile an hour you’d be an idiot to step out and hope he can stop. If your in the crosswalk already and the car is coming at you at 30 you better get out of the way. Just don’t be the stupid people that get in the crosswalk and don’t look to see if a car is coming because they feel they have the right of way. Which you would have the right of way, but if the car hits you because you weren’t looking, shame on the driver but, your dead so, use common sense and stop asking dumb questions.
I’m not sure it’s a dumb question. Similar safety considerations apply to people walking on Route 4. I too hope the city makes mascoutah a bike/pedestrian friendly place soon.
ATTENTION COUNCILMEN BATTAS, SEIBERT, AND ELBE: We need your help! When you took office, you promised residents that you would stand tall for them, protect their interests. At the next council meeting, Mayor McMahan and Councilman Weyant will vote yes to raising utility rates. There is no doubt about that. Now is the time to show us how powerful you three are and how much you care about your neighbors. We implore you to vote no to the increase. All three of you need to vote no or it will pass and we will be paying higher electrical rates than ever before. Our paychecks/social security checks can only go so far. Councilmen we are begging, pleading for your help.
I agree with your plea. But we all know they won’t do a thing to stop this. What’s funny is Mcmahan and Weyant ran as conservatives. Looks to me they lied about that.
Since when was Pat a conservative when he ran as a democrat a few years ago.
Because Mike Baker was running as a Dem. So I guess he ran for what ever political party didn’t have a candidate. Well he’s proving he has no idea what’s going on.
Baker moved to Florida last summer. City government is by partisan. Since you may not understand the term, it means that run Mc Mahnn, Baker, Battas, Elbe , Wyannt and Seibert didn’t run as democrats or republicans.
Is it acceptable to pull your kids early from school if there is potentially bad weather coming? Heard some folks complaining that Scott AFB was taking precautions and released people from work to avoid the weather and that getting their child from school was unnecessary. Shutting the base doesnt mean come get your kid from school. Id like to think I would rather not be caught out in a freakish storm if I can avoid it. But the comments made seemed a little ridiculous.
You are 100% correct. Raising our electric bills bills is a sham. They don’t understand the electric service in Mascoutah at all. I should have voted differently. I guess our x councilman Baker got tired of butting heads with others on the electric and moved. Where did he go?
I don’t know the other two, but I bet hands down that Wally will vote nope.
Your wrong. they will all fold and tell us we don’t understand why the town needs the money. its all about trying to be bigger and better and we pay for that type of thinking.
We need to all attend the citys meeting the night they vote. They need to know how we feel about this.
There is the mayor and 4 council men. Three of them need to vote against this for the electric increase to fail. It wont be the mayor obviously. At least 3 of the others need to vote against it. Are they brave enough?
I say NO. We have to live within our budgets, so should the city. People have been complaining about electirc rates for years in Mascoutah. Enough is enough. We elected you to do what we want. SO PLEASE DO IT!! Vote NO.
Thank the President for inflation. The city has to pay bills too and they have gone up. No win situation for the council.
I agree but there could still be cuts. We don’t need the cost of a new city manager when the current asst has been doing the job since last year. there are other cuts that could be made.
We need a qualified city manager and not an assistant. Find someone qualified and get rid of the assistant position. And maybe, re-evaluate the offered salary range for said city manager.
Name some cuts that would affect electric rates? City manager would barely scratch it as I bet only small portion of salary comes from the electric funds if any
Crickets
They just raised flat fees $10-$20, per month, a year ago. Now they want another $3-$5. No I don’t think so. They should have planned better.
So have one massive increase instead of gradual? Yea that makes sense and will go over well
They probably should have planned better but, that is not the fault of the current council.
Just learned that Exxon is reporting record profits from oil and gas. Meanwhile, many countries are talking about subsidizing fuel prices… using money that’s supposed to go toward being less dependent on fossil fuels. These oil tycoons don’t miss a beat, do they?
Here we go again.
I find it quite humorous that Apple Computer made more money in 2021 than the top four oil and gas companies combined. Why is it okay?
Maybe because dumb people still don’t mind paying big money for limited types of electronics. I don’t get it either.
It’s Scottish American month. Let’s party
“Even though I’m pro-life, I don’t care if others can’t afford life-saving insulin!” Put THAT on a sign and sell it on the corner why don’tcha?
I’m sorry your life sucks so bad.
How did we get from pro-life to insulin? You must be one of the highly educated without intelligence.
Because it’s seems the average pro-lifer doesn’t care what happens to the child after they’re born.
Even if that were true, the child would at least have a chance for a life. Not everyone ends up as miserable as you.
Hopefully, Henry The Cop , will run again in the next election. If he does, I’m sure he would vote no to increase electrical rates.
I don’t understand why the MHS Graduation ceremony is being held at 7 p.m. on a Sunday. My parents were going to come out for the weekend, but now they will have to leave before the ceremony. Couldn’t it be scheduled earlier or at least on a Saturday?
I want to applaud the school districit’s excellent interlect by changing the time of the graduation ceremony, and in also waiting until invitations by families have already been printed. By changing the time, the school district has loudly and clearly disregarded relatives that will be driving or flying in to watch their loved ones during the ceremony, but now can’t, because they would need to leave before the start to be able to arrive back to work on Monday. Your compassion is as high as your unnecessary and extremely inflated salary.
If it was at 2:00 you guys would all complain that its to hot. Well lets do it at 10:00, oh my goodness, we would have to get up to early. Lets do it on Saturday, that’s when our party is planned. Okay, how about Friday? How dare the school do it on Friday and people would have to take off work. Life is about choices, either choose to be at the ceremony and sacrifice something else, or don’t go to the ceremony. Life will go on with or without your loved ones at the ceremony.
You fail to miss the issue. I don’t care too many care about the time as long as planned well ahead of time and don’t change it
How dare the school district not use their “interlect”? Hilariously ironic
Sometimes the communication from the faculty is much better than the administrators. Easy for them to make brash decisions and what’s best for them. Sometimes poor planning on an organization should bite the bullet rather than disrupting everyone’s plans.
I was at the Sportsplex on Monday. I witnessed several Team Mascoutah volleyball player run to use the restroom. They had no manners while pushing their way the smaller children. They were also very rude. My children do not act like this in public. My husband and I raised our kids right. The parents and coaches need to start doing the right thing.
I heard that Motto “Mart” Mortgage and Remax is going to have huge signs on the side of all the schools, just to let everyone know they donated. Appreciate their contributions, but does everything need to be a bill board or can they possibly actually donate some time and money without making it all about them? A true donation doesn’t come with handshakes and pictures, all it is saying is, man I making a lot of money off of you all, so let me advertise by donating. I wonder if there is any special treatment given to them for all their contributions. Small town famous.
What they have helped accomplish in this community is remarkable. They’ve built subdivisions, they’ve helped grow this town in a positive way, they’ve donated countless hours to help improve our town, our schools, and our community. For you to have an issue with them taking some pictures is absurd.
Alumni field has a big sign of all the donors. Ag building has a big sign of all the donors. Does that bother you to?
Except they never volunteer their time unless it’s to promote their business unlike many other local business owners here in town.
Sounds like someone is jealous they aren’t “Small town famous”
“Small Town Famous” – Love it!
Maybe should go talk to the coach or organization first before blast them on here. Who do I talk to and complain about you being rude too?
Kudos on being such great parents! I’m think all parents in Mascoutah will do a better job now that you told us how to do it! I hope you continue to tell us how to raise our kids the right way in future sound offs, and the proper way to run to the bathroom.
Here’s your cookie
Sounds like someone’s child didn’t make this team.
I was watching my daughter in gymnastics. Kind of hard to miss the volleyball players running towards the restroom and almost knocking the small kids down.
The other day I was around some small kids at the park and they ran in front me. Such jerks…… Grow up
Typical Team Mascoutah “click” parent… my kid is perfect and does nothing wrong!
Typical keyboard warrior.
This is comical, another faceless key board warrior looking to slander an organization in which provides tremendous benefits to kids. I’m sure we can make the assumption that all parents and kids in this organization are bad because someone hurried to the bathroom.
I was not slander.
Good one
The middle schoolers should know better than pushing the younger kids out of the way.
wondering why you didn’t go to the coach or the parents {they sit in one section and are easy to find}or the manager of sportsplex about your grievance rather than spout off on here, guess it’s a lot easier to be a keyboard warrior and avoid all confrontation
wonder what would have happened if a white actor had slapped Chris Rock ?
We all know what would happen. His career would be ruined. Every media outlet would essentially crucify him and call him racist and bring up every little possible thing from his past.
Wonder what will happen when the public finds out the whole scene was staged? There was no slap. Slow motion film has proved it. i think the Oscars needed something to jazz up the program because their ratings have been sinking for years. And it worked. You can’t go on the Internet or watch a news program without seeing something about the incident. Five seconds of Oscar history was made.
The whole thing must have went over my head. I’ve seen the clip several times but I didn’t think the “joke” was that funny nor something that someone should slap you for. It’s not like Chris Rock called Will’s wife a wh*** or a sl** on national television. I have to agree with the former person who commented on this. I think it was all for the ratings.
What does it matter? This wasn’t about race, let’s keep it that way.
right on, as long as its black on black crime who cares ? If Alex Baldwin wound have done that he would be escorted off stage and put in jail ! double standards at its best
I disagree that Alec Baldwin would have been put in jail just for slapping someone. After all he shot and killed a woman and hasn’t seen a jail cell yet.
it wouldn’t have any other narrative but racial injustice.
I thought Tom’s was going out of business?
Is the FFA holding a fish fry this year?
I think they had it a couple weeks ago.
NO
When did the big field between Laugh and Learn and the Dollar General become a dirt bike track? I notice people riding dirt bikes there so is it free to ride there or do I need to pay as I do at the track in Coulterville?
You know what would solve that problem? If something actually got built there like there was gonna be.
Vice President Biden says no US troops are going to Ukraine. That’s really code for yes they will be going.
I see what you did here. Good on you
To the lady that has become the “town know-it-all” on Facebook, especially the Residents of Mascoutah page, please shut the he** up! You don’t have to try to prove you know everything, and you certainly don’t have to comment on everything first. Does your life consist of waking up, going on Facebook, and then leaving Facebook at night to go back to bed? Your ego must be enormous if you think everyone is just waiting for your opinion and vast knowledge of Mascoutah.
Read my mind. Which one? There’s two to three haha
Names, we need names. Then we can possible tell you if she’s full of it.
Absolutely not!! She is the type who would sue me, my wife, my kids, and my dog!!! LOL
She’s usually right, so maybe you should shut the he** up!
LOL…Seeeeeee. You know exactly who we are talking about. Now that’s funny!
She was back at it again yesterday
Gotta love Missouri. Purchased gas over there today and it was 94 cents cheaper per gallon than Mascoutah.
Why doesn’t The Herald publish ALL of the seniors who have committed to a college or trade school rather then just when submitted. Seems there is a lack of good news everywhere these days and all of the kids deserve the recognition. Not hard info to find.
Military as well, I should have included that originally.
Same goes for Band and Guard.
It really doesn’t matter and isn’t that big of a deal. Don’t we hand out enough participation trophies as is?
Good job. How much of that gas did you burn on the way back home?
Not much since it’s only a 37 mile drive
Agree. Yesterday Missouri was $1.06 cheaper than here. Also, why does their prices change 2-3 times per week and yet our high price just stays at the same price for a month or more.
Wow! Everyone is so quiet this week. What gives? Finally give up complaining about the roads, politicians, school district, etc?
Oh we will be back today. The weather is crappy, which tends to make us crabby.
I’ll go first. That dude that won the women’s national swimming championships for the NCAA should be stripped of his “accolades” It is embarrassing what our society has allowed to become acceptable and ESPN thinks we should praise this dude for beating girls.
I wonder if he actually feels like he accomplished something beating women at swimming.
I wonder how good he was when he had to compete against other men?
Totally agree. I for one would like to know why ‘true women’ are not up in arms! From Amy Schneider, who won over 1 million dollars on Jeopardy, to Lia Thomas dominating the collegiate sport of swimming, these MEN are being praised as successful women. To me this a massive slap in the face to naturally born women who identify as such. Where are your voices?? I guess as a young privileged white born male, I need to start identifying as an Hispanic-Native American Female of African descent to get a head in this country. Unreal
You have to find a true liberal to find out this logic . Mascoutah might not have one being a conservative town.
Conservative town? Not anymore. There are more snowflakes here now then ever before.
When done please take your used condoms and dump them in the trash (especially when the dumpster is 10ft from the place of the deed) instead of leaving them in the parking lot for others to find. It is gross and very seedy!
What was this at?
I’m not telling where because then they’ll just make a game of it. It’s disgusting and the last thing I want is to see more.
Very seedy!
I guess we should be happy they are wearing a condom.
I heard that the school district is trying to do away with the gifted program at Mascoutah Elementary. Why??? This is such a great program. My son has been in honors classes since 5th grade. He had behavioral issues because he was bored. The classes were too easy. Now he is challenged and is still in the honors program in high school.
I agree. They have not given an explanation why they are trying get rid of the program. So sad.
We have all kinds of teams either heading to state or winning state. Obviously the current school program is working. Why would you want to change it? The district should be shouting from the rooftops, not trying to dismantle a perfectly good system.
Anyone else recently contacted our state political representatives and not receive a response?
I have composed and mailed letters to State Senator Chris Belt (D) and State Rep LaToya Greenwood (D)- both represent constituents from Mascoutah and Scott AFB- and have received zero response. I mailed the letters in May 2021 and in September 2021 (sent the Sep letters via certified mail, so I know they received them) to their local/district offices AND to their respective offices in Springfield. I even followed-up with phone calls to their local and Springfield offices and still didn’t receive a response to the multiple voicemails that I Ieft per the answering services’ requests. Nothing in terms of a reply …silence.
I’m originally from Ohio, and back when I was growing up, if we sent a letter to our local representatives, we would always get a reply. It was a very simple process and worked mutually well. It might not have been the response we had wished for, in terms of action or agreement, but it was at least a respectful reply to our communication. I get the feeling that Illinois politicians don’t have that sense of duty or responsibility. Actually, I positively know they don’t as evidenced by their lack of any action.
At this point in the process, I’m not even concerned about my issue, for I’m much more concerned that my so-called local representatives don’t even care enough to even acknowledge a constituent’s letter. Personally, I think this non-responsiveness is pathetic. I (we) pay these people’s salaries (personally and office staff), and yet they can’t even reply with a simple acknowledgement. They should be ashamed of themselves! I was wondering if any other Mascoutah constituents have encountered the same situation with these clowns? Four letters sent, four phone calls made, yet Belt and Greenwood won’t even reply to a fellow constituent…disgusting representation in my opinion.
I completely agree with your assessment of the situation. It’s disgusting and shameful! The democrats think they are above the law and they are the ones that run this state. My husband has contacted our republican reps several times and has always heard back from Mike Bost. Perhaps you are supporting the wrong party.
Yes, I have also called Rep. Greenwood’s office. No response.
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve heard from the neighboring State Representative that his office is flooded with calls from people from our district because they can’t get answers from their reps. Luckily, it’s election season, so there is hope!
Contact Rep Charlie Meiers office they always respond.
I’ve talked to Charlie Meier’s office about this. They’re busy trying to do actual work for their district but, they still accommodate Rep. Greenwood’s constituents because she won’t. We need a real representative in that office that will give it the attention it deserves.
I tried to go to the Social Security office to file for Medicare after the online version said there was a problem with my account and I should call the Social Security Hot Line. After I tried calling 4 times, being put on hold for 45 minutes to 1 hour and half each time, I tried going in person to the Belleville office. It of course is close, but there was a security guard inside who after banging loudly on the door finally opened up and told me I’d have to call the hot line that no one had worked in the office for over 2 years. I wonder what he was guarding?
I tried calling again and after 30 minutes on hold a woman told me to hold again and I said no. She told me I’d have to and she hung up on me. I called Senator Durban’s office, all of our state congressmen’s offices and the only person that responded was Mike Bost office. They were extremely helpful and hooked me up with a Social Security official out of Alton that then arranged a call from the Belleville office. WHY ISN’T OUR SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE NOW OPEN!!! Everything else is.
UNREAL….my tax dollars at work. Websites that don’t work, public offices that aren’t open to the public, being put on hold indefinitely and public officials that don’t return calls. And they wonder why people are disgruntled with government. Welcome to the new world.
I just read the Letter to the Editor from James Saffel. What the heck was he babbling about? I couldn’t understand any of it.
I applaud his passion about the high cost of electricity, but his numbers plus the way he goes about telling people is so far out in left field. He’s very old and I think he means well, but he needs to talk to someone younger who could write up a report for him to read at the council. Something that makes sense.
New Baden dissolving their Parks & Rec Board.
Read the room. Can’t you see we are more worried about arguing over gas prices and covid vaccines. Geez.
Russian air strikes are now hitting hospitals. But I guess the US and Europe will continue to watch from the sidelines and do nothing.
If you can’t figure out why we don’t help them fight maybe you shouldn’t post comments.
Our politicians always brag about how great democracy is and how it’s our responsibility to defend it anywhere in the world. I guess it only matters what country the fight is in. Maybe we won’t help because we can’t defeat Russia. After all, we lost in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan so why would we be able to defeat Russia
Check your facts on some of those area’s we help fight.
I never heard a politician say we are responsible to defend democracy anywhere in the world.. Who you been talking to??
If I didn’t know better I’d swear Biden is trying to get Trump reelected in 24.
Let’s hope he succeeds
Looks like the kids brought covid home from Florida instead of warm weather. So far 3 confirmed cases. I wonder how many of the kids were not vaccinated. Shame on the parents and kids for not getting this none before their field trip. Very important.
Go get a life. The vaccine doesn’t even work. Shame on you for being how you are.
It have a function, but no bullet proof vest.
The vaccine does work. I am fully vaccinated and boostered.. I have been exposed multiple times and tested negative everytime. Follow the science.
And I am fully unvaccinated. Still kickin. Follow the science? Oh you must mean the science that created this virus? Yeah….I’ll get right on that for ya Karen.
what does being vaccinated have to do with anything? you can still get Covid being vaccinated!
That is NOT always the case. I have had both shots and booster. I have been exposed three times and have tested negative all three times. Typical Republican .
Don’t blame these comments on the real Republicans. The Trump cult follows come up with these brainless comments. Hopefully we’ll get a true conservative in office soon. Bidens screwing up beyond belief. So we have a real good chance of that. Keep Orange out of the office.
Right but your anecdotal “evidence” is also not always the case. That’s part of the problem with the extremists on both sides of this argument–they only speak and believe in absolutes. There are no absolutes with this.
To all you Trump Haters that voted for Biden, please post anything good to come from this administration. Just tickled to death with all that’s happening now! LOL
You don’t follow politics much do ya??
Crickets
What if you hate trump but didn’t vote for biden?? Should I just post how much a liar trump is. Or how he wants us to think with the same mentality people had in the 40’s? We don’t care about anyone but ourselves.
RBOB Futures just took out the all time high of $3.65 set in July of 2008. We could see an upside objective of $4.85 to $4.90 come into play. Tack on approximately a dollar in taxes and we have $5.75-$6.00 a gallon.
Friendly reminder that Russia is the world’s second largest producer of oil. Blame Putin, not Biden!
Haha good one
So what, we have a pipe line in Amercia that Biden shut down. So do I have to say the obvious. ??
you do understand that the keystone pipeline had 4 phase. Which actually included 2 subphases for a total of 6. The only one not completed was the final phase which was simply a shortcut across the Dakota’s. Phase 1 brings tar sands to Woodriver and Patoka. Phase 2 split phase 1 in Steele city and continue south into north Texas. Phase 3 completed the southern leg to Houston Texas. Phase 4 would of only increased daily output by a maximum of 500,000 barrels. So please explain how not completing phase 4 is the cause. That 500,000 barrels would only amount to a 2% increase of the daily barrels already shipped in America which stands at above 18 million barrels.
Keystone XL was supposed to connect tar sand oil from Canada to a Gulf Coast refinery *for export.* None of that oil would’ve gone to us.
This has NOTHING to do with the war, this has to do with a poorly managed government.
Based on the close of RBOB Futures today, gasoline should be $4.49 to $4.59 on Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week.
Regarding the post about Trump dividing America…he didn’t. The liberal left media and celebrities did that all on their own.
You are 1000% correct.
Liberal media has been around for at least since Clinton. Why didn’t it divide back then?? I agree the crap the libs pulled while Trump was in there was a bunch of BS. All the money they pi**ed away trying to hang him with something that didn’t work. All Trump had to do is never talk. What came out of his mouth screwed this county up. And that’s not counting his a chronic liar, and has been all his life. His own father even admitted he was, and not just peoples opinion.
Then we got sleepy joe who can hardly complete one sentence. I rather have Trump back and put up with him not shutting up at times when we should
Sleepy Joe? I assumed he’s just brain dead.
Regarding Trump dividing the country, the strong division started with Obama weakening the U.S. on a global scale. Obama also started the attack on our law enforcement which is still going strong today. Police are being shot and killed in record numbers; he also started defund the police. All these things together helped elect Trump.
Gas at Mascoutah Moto Mart just went up to $4.09!!!! Higher prices at different businesses will become reality simply out of necessity. How are we going to survive this? I’m honestly scared.
VOTE REPUBLICAN!!
Amen!!
I think that when we look at the presidents of Russia, China, North Korea and the U.S., the world is screwed. We are closer to a world war than what people want to admit.
We all know if it get’s to that point it will be nuclear. Most of us won’t be here after that. And who would want to survive that. Maybe we should start over. With America being so divided as we are, unity we stand, divided we fall.
Well folks, it’s time for our Presidents first ‘State of the Union’ address. When I watch these ‘orchestrated performances’ I always think there is a guy hiding off camera somewhere holding up ‘applause’ signs at just the right moment. I wonder how busy he’ll be this evening? Record inflation? no applause there……$4 gas at the pump? nope……botched evacuation of Afghanistan? keep your seat sign guy…..how about the basement dwelling approval rating? no, I don’t think so. Maybe it’s best they save our Nation the $15/hr minimum wage they pay the person and just have him stay home. So looking forward to this evenings comedy line up.
Basement dwelling??
Typical Orange party logic. If your going to pin inflation on Biden then Trump was in office when Covid hit. Do we blame him for that??
This is a joke right? Inflation is most definitely pinned on Biden and his worthless administration.
I would push back on the comment of record inflation. If you revisit inflation in the late 1970’s, the translation at the pump today would be $8.50 to $10.00 per gallon. The cost to borrow money was anywhere from 19% to 21% during the late 70’s to the beginning of the 1980’s. The employment rate was north of 10 percent. If you want to blame anyone, blame both parties. I can only hope numerous Independents emerge and we as a nation vote out the Career Politicians on both sides of the aisle.
Open your thinking instead of one sided. Pointless to comment any farther.
Please tell me how I should open up my thinking? The left continuously tried to tear down Trump and his supporters. Now that Biden is office, nobody is allowed to say anything mean, true, or voice opinions? Way to many snowflakes nowadays.
I agree with the post. If you think of the good and bad decisions that either party makes they equal out. Some good some bad. I am amazed that literally one guy can split America up the way Trump did. It’s almost impressive.
Haha good way thinking Trump split America. Sounds like you are part of the problem listening to the liberal media that split America. Biden also is a pretty good divider in chief. #not my president or is that not acceptable anymore since trump is gone?
Don’t see how you can blame Trump for covid when everyone that has a brain knows it came from China,as for as inflation,it’s the highest it’s been in 40 yrs,yes that happened since Biden took office, look it up
You should read all the comments before adding to it.
The left and Biden will continue to pat themselves on the back for all the “work” they have “accomplished” When in reality as you stated, gas is nearly $4 (similar to that of the prior left ran administration) and inflation is setting records. Oh and lets not forget the wonderful job Joe has done by removing sanctions the Trump admin put in place, then one year later having to reimpose them. Way to go little buddy!
Watching Vice President Biden speak was comical in the fact that he actually believes he has accomplished anything positive. And President Harris in the background with her “why am I here” gaze. They put up a fence around the capitol because they are scared of Americans, yet leave the southern border wide open. I’m curious as to why Mr. Biden thinks he has created more jobs in the last year than any other president has in their first year. Wonder where this info comes from?
Not really scared of Americans. Only the morons that follow Trump. But for the rest of it, ALL presidents lie. It’s been that way at least since Johnson. Before that I would think they lie also, I was to young to care then.
How is someone that “follows” Trump a Moron? Please elaborate.
We might be morons but that still makes us more intelligent than you.
Well let’s see, trump followers stormed the capital. Saying they were morons is being nice to what they really are. Don’t be so hard on yourself admitting your a moron.
So you call all trump supporters morons, even though only 2000-2500 trump supporters stormed the capitol?
Oh and since you think you are smarter than me, I hope you do realize at least one mistake you made when trying to call me a moron for supporting Trump. They stormed the Capitol Building not the capital, but you’re right, you are way smarter than I am because you support Biden. What a clueless, oblivious, gullible person you are.
List how your life is any better since the last administration,or are you gonna be like the rest of the people i’ve asked to do that and not answer
At least you cult followers hold to your leader.
Grandpa Joe should be in a nursing home receiving round-the-clock care. The state of our union will only get worse under this administration with a president whose cognitive skills are declining at an alarming rate.
Citing the economic impact of the COVID pandemic on businesses, the council has, for the second year in a row, waived all license fees for businesses in town. Nice for businesses, but no consideration for the citizens.
First, a basic business license is only $50. It’s a business expense; a deduction on the business’ tax return.
Second, this waiver of fees concerns income to the city, yet it was rammed through on one reading and a vote. Why didn’t it follow the normal practice of two readings and a vote?
Third, the mayor and one councilman have businesses in town. Both voted for the waiver. Both financially benefitted from their vote. That’s a conflict of interest. They should have recused themselves but didn’t. Was the city attorney asleep?
Now, for all those people that complain about their power bills: your elected and hired officials think more of the business owners than you. If they defend the waiver as “only” $20,000, that won’t even buy the new stretcher the ambulance service is requesting.
While I don’t disagree with your issue, I don’t think the Mayor has voting rights with the exception of breaking a tie. If this was the case, then you are spot on. On a side note, in a small town like ours, it’s impossible to find someone to serve on council that doesn’t have some form of bias in their voting. They are either directly affected by each vote, or they know a friend that will be.
Fencing materials are going up around the US Capitol again. Too bad we can’t secure our southern border as good as we secure the capitol building.
Only fencing materials I am concerned about is the 4-5 illegal, hoosier chicken wire, temporary fences in Mascoutah, for dogs, on County, Fuesser, & 6th St, while the rest of us, properly spent thousands of dollars, & have respect, & are competent.
What are you even talking about???
guess you can’t read
On the subject of Fuesser, what’s up with the disgusting mold on practically every home and fence in newest subdivisions? Very trashy looking! There are some good cleaners that will take care of it like 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaner and Mold Armor.
My compliments to Marilyn Welch. I enjoyed reading her articles about the blizzard of 82. The back page story about the newly married couple was great! Thank you, Marilyn, and I hope to see a few more stories from you!
I second the the accolades to Marllyn .Her story brought so many memories back of the storm. Thanks Marilyn.
My utility bill is over $700!!! I almost had a heart attack. My wife and i are not frivolous people. We keep the thermostat at a reasonable temperature, and if we get chilly, we put on sweaters. and before you ask, no I do not have a water leak anywhere. That $700 is more than both our car payments. This is ridiculous. I am going to attend the next council meeting but my voice alone is not going to make a differance. Please join me. Together we can take a stand. This has got to stop and it needs to stop now.
Please share more info. Electric heat? Old construction? Smart thermostat? Two months on one bill?
Your saga will fall on deaf ears.
Both your electric usage and water usage is metered. The City does not just make up the usage or the dollar amount. On average 1200-1500 gallons of water per person is used in a given month. The weather was and is colder during this time of year. My City Bill is higher also during this time of year. Instead of just complaining about the amount of your bill, you may check again for water leaks and how to reduce electric usage.
Only way to stop the high electric bill is move. You won‘t be able to change it. Many have tried. But then Ameren is jacking there prices also so live with it.
Why? Why do we have to live with it? Why can’t the City make changes? There must be something they can do. Residents can survive with these high cost bills. And no, I don’t want to move, but I don’t was to just sit back and settle either. There must be an answer somewhere.
If you know any 75+ year old’s lived in mascoutah back in the 60’s. They can fill you in on what morons back then decided to have there own power company. It’s to hard to explain in a forum. Legal reasons. And it’s here to stay.
Actually, Mascoutah completed it’s original power plant in 1892. A town having it’s own power plant was considered progressive. The Mascoutah Brewing Company had a beer called Electric Beer in recognition of the power plant.
In addition to Mascoutah, other local communities that have their own power companies include Freeburg, Waterloo, Breese, and Carlyle. While these communities no longer generate their own power, they do take maintain their infrastructure with their employees.
A few years ago, the News Democrat had a scathing article about high electric costs in Mascoutah. A resident complained about a $200 electric bill. The ND showed a picture of her bill. The entire utility bill, electric, water, sewer, and possibly trash collection, was $200. The electric portion was $100. The homeowner and reporter were too stupid to figure out the bill.
For those complaining about high bills, take a look at your living habits. Turn off unnecessary lights, check your thermostat, time your showers, check your doors and windows. You might be surprised a lot of your utility bill is wasted energy.
After that, educate yourself about the IMEA, their rules, and their investment in the Lively Grove power plant.
Nah. It’s easier to b****.
SOLAR SOLAR SOLAR we cut 3/4 of our bill out by going SOLAR with a battery reserve.
All my friends on ameren have very reasonable bills.
The $25 flat monthly fees, should be $10 or $15
We have a ten year old 3000SQF house with two adults & three kids, and our bill is never over $450. Averages $275-$375. AC 73, Heat 69. 5 or more showers daily, Dishwasher 4 times a week, Laundry 5 times a week, tvs chargers lights non stop.
You need to have your home evaluated for air/water leaks. Our home is 2 story, 2200 Sq ft, and 16 years old. Our bill has never been over $300 and that is electric/water combined. Average is between $160-$200 monthly.
Can we all agree that it’s time for the state to fix 6th street from 161 to 177? No more band-aids. Tear the whole thing up and put a new road down!
U got millions to pay for it?
The Federal Gov passed a billion dollar infrastructure bill, so the state of IL will have money. There will be a lot of road construction occurring over the next few years – might as well ask to include include 6th street!
Biden trying to get tough with Putin. Funny.
Biden couldn’t get tough with his dog,if he even remembers he has one
When arriving in town a sign says Welcome To Historic Mascoutah. What makes it historic?
At one time it said pre-historic LOL. Someone spray painted it. I would suggest you pay a visit to the History Museum.
It’s historic because how the town has been run since 1860. Until about 35 years ago Mascoutah didn’t want to grow. They even tried to have there own phone, power company so they didn’t have to go by what outsiders wanted. Thank God for cell phones otherwise we still pay long distance charge just to call St. Louis. And the stupidity behind there own power company well, your experiencing that brainless decision to this day with massive electric bills. And I wont even comment on how they treated people that weren’t white. So that’s our lovely town of Historic Mascoutah.
Well the town really hasn’t grown much in 35 years. It’s only grown by about 3,000-3500 role in the last fifty plus years. But that’s okay. It is a nice town. As far as the comment about how they treated people of other colors I don’t know anything about that. I do have an elderly black couple that lives a few houses from me and they have lived here over forty years and they still like it here. Both told me they never had any issues here because of their skin color
Sad some make a stupid generalization about the town. Yes there are some bad apples I am sure but overall very nice and welcoming town
I see the weekly email from the school district for the number of exposures reflects N/A. Wonder if it has anything to do with the Masks Optional? I would really like to know.
I bet it does.
Good time to get back to normal.
I would like to thank Officer Glander for his years of service in this great town of Mascoutah. I was glad to only be on his bad side once when i was a kid. I got to visit with him a couple hours before he shift ended and thanked him for what he stood for. Enjoy your time off Thank You again Office Henry G
What do I do if I can’t pay my electric bill?
Move out of Mascoutah AND stop voting for democrats.
Democrats or Republicans have nothing to do with the high cost of electricity in Mascoutah.
I would call city hall. They should work with you
Watch an episode of Gilligan’s Island. The professor invented free electricity nade by Gilligan.
Illinois Appellate court dismissed Pritzker’s mask mandate appeal. Thank goodness! Hopefully this temporary restraining order against school districts enforcing masks mandates trends in the right direction of no mask mandates!
Wow did anyone see the 70k+ super spreader event called the Super Bowl. Aghhhh
Not sure what your point is. Apparently you haven’t been watching regular season games the whole last year, NFL, College Football, NBA, NHL. Your in the minority. Time to move on.
Sounded like sarcasm to me
I watched it. Wasn’t a very exciting game. Thumbs down to the terrible halftime show. I listened to Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg back in the day but they are has beens now. In fact all of the performers are has beens. Why can’t the halftime show have performers that are more relevant to the present? Also shame on the NFL on its lack of diversity for the spectacle when they push diversity so much. I think Mickey Guyton did an awesome job on the national anthem and she also looked beautiful
Probably because no money is paid to half time performers. Bands of today are money hungry.
Mickey Guyton, Dre, Snoop, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar. Yeah, doesn’t sound diverse enough.
I watched. Only person of a lighter skin tone in the halftime show was Eminem. Let’s be honest. If the roles were reversed and every performer and dancer was White and only one person in the whole show was black there would be such an uproar.
So true
Welcome to the woke culture and Critical Race Theory brought to you by the democrat party.
Keep living in fear. Have fun with that
Have you seen the 157,00 people that crossed the border just last month, that’s a super super spreader,Aghhh!!!
Regarding the search committee for a new City Manager – why aren’t all the committee members residents of Mascoutah?
The 2018 committee had a member that lived in Engelmann Township. The 2021 committee has a member that lives in Belleville. Please don’t tell me he is a business owner. He goes home to another town at the end of the day.
Is that person work in town? Or own a business in town?
B/c the town is a$$ backwards. Duh.
You make that sound like we should all know that the town is a$$ backwards. Please explain, so I know whether I should continue to live here. Or, how about you relocate if it’s that bad?
Who is on the list?? Again, appears to be a big secret and shouldn’t be!!
The committee consist of, former mayor Daughtery, Jonn Jung, Zane Fulp, Tim Boyce, Rick Surmeier, Rob Stookey, and Kevin Dawson. Really it’s not a big secret, it’s on public record. There were 2 females asked, but declined. All of the above have the best interest of the city, and have volunteered countless hour and have never ask anything in return. Me as a citizen of Mascoutah think this is the best committee to help us move forward with a new city manager.
It’s interesting that the former mayor is involved. As long as the assistant cm doesn’t just hop right into that position, it’ll be ok. The assistant as the cm would be a huge mistake.
There are 100 different people that should be on there, before the former Mayor. Unbelievable. Sad.
The former mayor screwed up with the last few city manager appointments but maybe 4th time is the charm like they say.
Share your facts!!! 2 people on that list have never volunteered for anything to help the community. One is all about hisself and what can benefit him.
So it looks like there are some bullies in the school district that had to sue the school district about the mask mandate. They are thinking about themselves and not about others. The individuals that are wearing masks think about others as well as themselves.
The adults are teaching kids to be bullies. Great parents!!!! Not.
You sound like a bully
Seriously, can we just get over it? The school district is not mandating that the kids don’t wear masks. If you or the kids think that masks should be worn, then they should wear them. It’s pretty simple.
Bullies??? Every citizen in this country has a right to have a court of law address their grievances. It appears that the Governor’s mandates are illegal according to the judge’s ruling. A bully is someone who threatens and corerces others to comply with their demands. HINT…look in the mirror. These “bullies” are not forcing their will on you or your children but YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE on them!
So when do we stop wearing mask? If you are concerned about your child then have them wear a mask but don’t force it on mine.
Bullies can sue schools?? Why call them bullies? Or do you not know what a bully is?
In last week’s Herald, I was would have been thrilled to see so many Straight A students if I thought it was true. Are A’s being given out for participation only? I can’t believe that every school and every class had more “A” students than High Honor or Honor Roll students. In the past, that coveted list was small. What gives?
Coveted list of Straight A students? It’s grade school, man. Are you actually complaining that too many kids got straight A’s? Good Lord, aren’t there more important things to be concerned about? Have some coffee, take a nap, it’ll be OK.
Somebody’s angry they got left off. Good grief
Well this is the whinners forum. Even children can post.
I don’t have facebook so not sure what the conversation is about recycling pick up today. I contacted waste management Monday and was assured all recycling would be picked up this week. However, it sure doesn’t look like that will happen. I chatted with a WM employee this morning and was assured the same. I contacted city hall to get a local POC so I could ask directly but couldn’t get one. I even asked if they would contact WM but was told it was between me and WM as I am the customer. But didn’t they negotiate and vote on the contract…twice as I recall just to satisfy some unhappy residents? I think with this being a city-wide contract, the city would want direct involvement.
Ours wasn’t picked up for two weeks because of Snowmageddon. Big deal. Wait for the next pick up date, I don’t see this as such a major problem that the city needs to intervene on your behalf. It’s trash, man.
62258 has 26 new Covid cases this past week. Damn the Taste of Mascoutah really contributed to such a large number of cases……
So the 26 people that went to Taste of Mascoutah have covid now??
I would like yo say “I told you so”!
I bet there were way more than 26 there from photos and I think person was being sarcastic as some on here labeled it a superspreader yet it was not.
It sure was.
Haha
I hope these same people on here ,who find it necessary to attack people and organizations about mask wearing, head up to Springfield today and protest when JB drops the mask mandate. I’m sure they won’t , but rather will instead latch on to another topic they can try and find an audience for.
So you want people to protest that the mask mandate will be lifted?? Don’t you read the post on this forum??
There has been several comments bashing lifting the mask mandate but I think was more pronounced on Mascoutah Facebook groups. Crickets from several individuals
Does anyone else that has a subscription to this newspaper have a problem with receiving a copy four or five days after the publication date? How about not receiving it at all? In the last six weeks, I haven’t received it on two occasions. Even my street address on the mailing label lists a street that doesn’t exist. Have been to the Herald offices twice about the mailing address error, but apparently nobody there knows how to go into the computer and correct it. I personally don’t see a point in paying $50 for a paper that I either don’t receive or I receive it 4-5 days after the publication date.
Not surprised
That does surprise me. We have always received our paper on time. I haven’t had any reason to change addresses so I don’t have any experience with how that process goes. Overall we’re pleased with the paper and the content.
Have been getting it in the mail every Thursday for many many years. Never had a problem with anything but accessing the electronic version. They could spend a little money modernizing their website so it’s more user friendly.
If your problems continue, just pick up a free copy of the Scott Flyer at Casey’s, Legion or VFW. They’re free and with the exception of the front page, identical to the Herald.
There’s a good chance we all seen scams. These days the scammers are so good at making web pages that’s its getting harder to tell what’s legit and what’s a scam. Keeping this in mind, how can anyone totally believe any site that talks about how bad the shots for covid can be? Or how good they can be. ANYONE CAN PUT ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET. If you won‘t take it because you say it your choice, lighten up. If you get a vax because the government tells you to, that’s just crazy.
OMG there will be another super spreader event at sportsman’s this weekend. All you people that need the government to tell you how to live life better get out there.
What event would that be?
Yes what is it, I want to go!
I have a question that has been bothering me. Television shows long lines of people testing for COVID or how & where to pick up a COVID test. And now we are getting free COVID tests from the government. I don’t understand why. Please don’t slam me because I’m not for or against the tests, I just don’t understand their necessity.
If you test positive for COVID, there is still nothing you can take for it. If you wake up one morning, feeling bad, why not just stay away from people for a few days. Wouldn’t you do that with the flu?
Please be kind because I truly am interested in your honest opinion. Other than being a hospital patient, what is the point of the test?
Because the shepherds need to control the situation? There has to be chaos to maintain control. Without control, they are nothing.
Lib’s better get out there and stop this insanity.
I’d be more concerned with the upcoming Fireman’s dance at the end of the month. Imagine the entire Mascoutah volunteer fire department out at the same time with Covid!! GASP!!!! What ever will we do? Save us JB! Save us Robot Joe! Save us Kamala!! Save us Mayor Pat!! ;D
Mayer Pat is a conservative. Most conservatives don’t believe there is a covid crisis.
Oh give me a break. Typical liberal
So a judge has ruled that we can’t have a mask mandate. I am for the governor pushing back. Let’s see if the covid cases increase causing the schools to go all remote. We are never going to move out of this pandemic if we do not.
Regardless if should wear them or not, the governor is not above the law. Thank you judge for standing up to him
Our kids deserve a safe place to learn. If kids are not wearing masks they are at risk of catching covid. The governor will get this overturned.
Better wear mask every year for flu/cold, better wear helmets outside as can fall. I also hope your kids always wear mask at home and at friends house. Otherwise just a hypocrite
Takes one to know one.
Wow are you like 5? You can do better than that, please try again

My goodness. Quit treating it as a pandemic when it’s not. COVID has become an endemic. We are going to live with this for the rest of our lives, just like the flu. Get over the mask and vaccine fetishes.
The antivaxxer and antimasker will die and lower the gene pool. That is good with me. That will definitely resolve the issue.
Wow. Love for the fellow man. I’d hate to be you. I feel sorry for anyone that even knows you.
wondering if you might play Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol”sound kinda like him…”If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population”
Have you been living in a cave for the last 6 months? Masks do not stop the spread, vaccination’s DO NOT stop the spread. Fully vaccinated, mask wearing in public old woman here, and I’ve had it twice. Kindly let those who wish to return to normalcy do so, feel free to walk around with your mask ‘by choice’, or cower in your home.
This is the best forum ever. You can always tell who’s a liberal and who’s a conservative, and its hilarious. It’s almost like no one thinks with an open mind anymore. Keep up the single minded thinking morons.
I bet he’s a liberal that doesn’t wear a mask around his conservative friends.
I rest my case
Mascoutah hosted another super spreader this weekend at the Taste of Mascoutah. Saw pictures on Facebook with NO ONE wearing a mask. Watch the covid numbers increase.
Get a life. It was great seeing the event come back
I have a life, thank you very much. I am thinking about the safety of others and keeping them healthy, unlike you.
Umm. this isn’t facebook
I’m not sure how humanity could survive without you caring about everyone.
? do our city elected officials have to follow the same ordnances the rest of us have to? In a private post on Face Book, we see our mayor in the city cemetery drinking and pouring an alcoholic drink (7&7, whiskey and 7 up) on a grave as a birthday toast. While I do understand the departed was his best friend and agree with the intent, not following laws your sworn to uphold is a disgrace to the office. The mayor is the liquor commissioner of the city and should know better.
• Sec. 21-3-6. – Transporting, etc., in motor vehicles.
No person shall, within this municipality, transport, carry, possess, or have any alcoholic liquor in, upon, or about any motor vehicle in or on any public street, alley or place, except in the original package and with the seal unbroken.
• Sec. 21-3-7. – Open liquor—Cup-to-go prohibited.
The licensee shall not knowingly permit any person to leave his premises with open liquor or in a “cup-to-go”
• Sec. 21-3-11. – Unlawful acts.
It shall be unlawful for any person to do or commit any of the following acts within the city, to-wit:
(a Drink any alcoholic liquors on any public street, alley, sidewalk, or other public way without special permission granted by the mayor.
(b)
Drink any alcoholic liquors on any private property without permission of an owner thereof.
(c Appear on or in any public street, alley, sidewalk or other public place, including parks and recreation areas, in an intoxicated condition.
• This law states that it’s illegal to get drunk or use the cemetery for a picnic
• No person shall:
• (4) Use the cemeteries as picnic grounds, or consume alcoholic beverages in a cemetery, or bring the same upon the premises.
•
office. The mayor is the liquor commissioner of the city and should know better.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know this comment was made by a former councilman who thinks he is still important to the city. He’s not. It’s not like Pat was shooting off fireworks in the cemetery. It was one sweet gesture for a dear friend. Get over it and for God’s sake get a life!
Was it a former councilman or could it be a former city official? Either way, whoever it is needs to get over themselves.
Seriously you people think its okay to celebrate a deceased persons life by drinking and pouring an alcohilic beverage in his grave. For God’s sake, he is the mayor and should uphold his position with dignity and professionalism. A cemetary is a sacred place for our deceased loved ones, not a place for such disgraceful actions. What if everyone ran and did this at cemeteries for every loved one for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays? There are plenty of ways to honor a loved one. Hey how about donating to a local shelter, AA, homeless? Or go to a bar and toast the deceased. In a nutshell he is the mayor unfortunately and needs to abide by laws and be professional.
Yeah it was the deceased birthday but for Gods sake he is the mayor and should hold up his position with professionalism. Their are other ways to celebrate the deceased. What if everyone ran to the cemetary for every birthday, anniversary, holiday? Very unprofessional!
This was a FABULOUS way of celebrating Kenny! People go to loved ones gravesites and decorate them (to the point of tacky at times) and lay by them and do whatever to honor the person. Knowing Kenny, this was a great way of honoring him. It’s not like there was a dj and a bunch of scantily clad women out there. They did not make a scene or cause a disturbance. Our Mayor wasn’t drinking it either. Seriously, when you give back to this community as much as Kenny and Pat have, then your disgust and opinion may be relevant. Until then, Rest In Peace Kenny. We miss you.
Imagine being this guy. What a miserable *****. God bless your family for putting up with you.
Driving advice.
With the ice under the snow, carry a shopping bag of wood ashes in your vehicle. If you get stuck put them under your tires & you’ll have dry traction path & you can get your vehicle unstuck. When an old friend first told me about this, I thought he was just giving me another line of …… but after trying it, he was correct. Now, during the winter weather we have @ this time I have a bag of ashes in both of my vehicles.

It was a toast to a great friend and a wonderful volunteer that the community lost. Being upset over something like this makes me think that you are the type of person who wouldn’t have friends that think that highly of you.
Seriously? Can’t a guy even pour one out for his homies anymore?
I bet you have never went over the speed limit in your life. Better go follow the mayor around to catch him speeding too
The day a man can’t honor a friend in a respectful way irregardless if a law is “violated”, if he’s not hurting anyone else or causing a nuisance. Who cares. Move to communist China, maybe you’ll be happier there….
It does say unless you have permission from the mayor. Looks like he’s good, well assuming he gave himself permission… get a job let alone a selfless one serving your community. Theirs bigger things happening.
With permission from the mayor. I’m assuming he asked himself for permission. There is bigger news.
As I see the taste event. Eventually the non – vac’s will spread the illness to other like themselves. Some will die, some will have aftereffects maybe for life. Nature will take its course and thin out the weak among us and eventually end the pandemic.
To bad half the deaths are people that been vaxed. So your comment seems ..well, stupid.
You need to do your homework too. Unvaccinated deaths account for more than twice that of vaccinated folks. This data from the CDC a/o 22 January.
Wow drinking koolaid. You need to do some research before spreading lies
The majority of the people that are hospitalized and die directly due to the virus are non-vaccinated. If you really think that is wrong, I am sure there is some history of eating paint chips when you were a child or possibly in your bloodline. Your new name is empty Pez.
The truth lies in the details. The variants of the Chinese Virus have had different outcomes for injected and non-injected; because it has targeted different populations. It seems likely CoVid19 was meant to euthanize primarily the elderly, and those who were frail and in poor health. Delta was less specific in its’ targeting, and was a butt-kicker for those not injected. The injection does not seem to have kept “vaccinated” persons from getting the variant Omicron; and severity of symptoms have varied on both sides of the fence. Omicron has rapidly circulated, landing wherever it can, doing it’s good deed of gifting us with natural immunity, and probably less deaths in all age groups than the flu in years past. CoVid was here prior to 2019 and is probably not going anywhere. Wearing masks to keep our germs from landing on others when we are not well is something this country can adapt from Asian and other countries; and sanitizing hands after being out and about is a good practice, which I’ve instituted, seeing it as preventative and not the act of a certified “germaphobe.” It is tragic that so many loved ones were sacrificed, these past 2+ years, especially, if the release and spread of CoVid 19 was not an accident.
Hey, Dr. Fauci- I thought it was well-known that people vaccinated or not, spread this horrific virus that over 99% of people survive. I understand your agenda is “us versus them” but, I am so sick of hearing regurgitated science from people who refuse to believe that life begins at conception. Thank you for your opinion, carry on.
I don’t disagree but it is what it is. Its an event to raise money for the organization and usually a couple people that make to much money on this town come and donate in the auction. I feel what you are saying, as long as it doesn’t impact our schools (which many of the teachers, nurse, etc. was there with no mask), then it is what it is. Glad they were able to have a good night and raise some money.
Just saw pictures of the Taste of Mascoutah. Looks like it will be a Super Spreader of covid with everyone not wearing a mask. Anyone want to take a guess on how many cases there will be from the event?
Did you forget this is a conservative town.
My guess is 4.
I know we’re not supposed to sign off on comments but, I can’t help it on this one. Up your nose with a rubber hose. – Vinnie Barbarino
The Mascoutah High School Winterguard did an awesome job hosting their first competition on Saturday. I just wish there were more students in attendance to cheer for them.
I agree. Colorguard is never supported by the students, unlike other sports. Sad.
Too bad we do not have many students support Gyard and band. More students support the athletes.
It’s been that way since forever. And the band don’t expect a lot of followers. It’s the band.
Maybe that can change. The band and guard deserve the same respect as the other athletes. Same goes for the Math and Science leagues.
Totally agree. I’ve lived it.
Don’t see band supporting spring sports. But I don’t see them complaining.
Do we have a problem at our schools? We are going to have shortened schedules again!!! How does the school board and superintendent justify this. If you can cover 75% of the day, then why not the remainder of the day. Seems like Covid is becoming a convenient answer for the administration to short change our youth and burden the taxpayers the same amount or more because we have to cover the additional time away from work.
It seems that the City of Mascoutah has a lack of diversity For its employees. I suppose there are a number of females working at City Hall, but no diversity that I am aware of. In addition, there doesn’t seem to be any in the Street or Electrical Departments. It seems odd that unionized workforces don’t have more representation from diverse individuals. The State of Illinois mandates a certain number of minorities for road construction departments. Those are presumably the same union as the street department. Shouldn’t it be easier to find diverse workers for a steady year round job. Just seems to be a lack of focus for a City that could call the local unions and have minorities tomorrow.
Don’t you know you have to be related to someone there to get a job? Pretty much how it works.
Best person should get the job. Race bait
The city water dept did have one female on the crew. I don’t know if she is still employed. I haven’t ever seen anyone employed that wasn’t Caucasian or different .
And here I thought that the goal was to get the best person for the job, instead of filling out some quota. Huh. I guess I missed that day in school when they taught us to treat people based on the color of their skin.
Are minorities and women applying for those jobs? Anytime I’ve seen a job posted, anyone and everyone can apply. When it comes to my utilities and city workers, I want to see the most qualified out there. I really don’t care what color or gender you are.
As a citizen of the town and someone that has worked most of their life in the private industry will tell you this, if they apply and qualify, they should have every chance to get the job as someone else. The problem is, to get minorities to apply and find people that qualify. Not saying they don’t exist, its just not as common. Look what biden is doing. He has made a statement already that the next SCOTUS will be a black woman. What a joke. Talk about divide. You want to get your job because of your color or gender, I don’t. My point is, we should examine the applications and see how many have applied and what their qualifications are, then we can put an action plan together. Don’t make people hire non qualified people because of a quota, that is a waste of our time and money.
There is an equal lack of diversity in District 19 schools in leadership positions, in instructional positions, in executive assistant positions, in bus driver positions, in custodial positions. When asked about the lack of diversity in a school board candidate forum several years ago, all the candidates said they didn’t think this was a problem. Things have slowly gotten better but the city and school district would benefit from an outreach program that encourages minority candidates to believe they at least have a shot at getting a job. There is no easy answer to this issue, but leaders should strive to ensure employees represent the diversity of the communities they serve.
Perhaps the best qualified person or persons are hired @ the time the post ion is open. Wouldn’t you want to have the best qualified person hired, instead of hiring someone else. If I’m paying for something I want the best I can get. I don’t want to have someone that is not as qualified hired because of some arbitrary quota.
Brad Myers for Mayor of Mascoutah😎
Does he even live in city limits?
Yes he sure does.
It would be better than our current one
Seriously? He gave himself a premature shoutout on his new job, and the new place’s council turned him down. Now mayor? No. Please. Exit gracefully.
Hahaha somebody’s just wanting to stay relevant.
Not mayor of Liberty Lake, Washington from what I hear
MASKS OFF – February 1, 2022
Attorney Tom DeVore has requested that parents send their kids to school Tuesday, February 1st, without a mask. He stated that if enough parents (and kids) have the courage to stand up against mandates, we can stop the tyranny. There are many parents that are opposed to their kids being forced to mask up, and its time make our voices heard. There is strength in numbers, and we need to find each other. I will be walking my son into school Feb 1st without a mask, and ask others to join.
What is happening to our children, our schools, our country, and the world is appalling, and there is a growing number of parents in the diocese who are tired of their children being in masks and forced to quarantine. Parents speak to school boards and principals, and it is always stated that they are just following the guidance and are bound to the diocesan rules. It gets passed on, and, unfortunately, parents receive the same message that administrators hands are tied and they have to follow the guidance or risk losing accreditation and funding. Numerous public school parents and teachers across the state are awaiting verdicts in 2 separate lawsuits against the state to stop this illegal mandate. Our children have been in masks and dealt with quarantines for 2 years. They have fallen behind academically, socially, developmentally, and the rates of anxiety and depression are skyrocketing. All of this in a group that has a statistical zero chance of hospitalization or severe illness due to covid.
