Complete letter from Mascoutah High School Principal Amy Kelly Johnson
Mascoutah High School administered a CharacterStrong Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) survey on March 5th, 2026 to the student body to better understand student experiences related to school climate, relationships and overall well-being. The results, based on nearly 1000 student responses, provide important insight into the day-to-day experiences of students and reinforce the school’s ongoing commitment to a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all. The survey shows that the vast majority of Mascoutah High School students report positive experiences at school some, most and all of the time, particularly in areas related to feeling supported by staff and connected to others. A few of the survey highlights to note:
Relationships with staff emerged as a significant strength.
97% of students reported that educators treat them with respect
93% shared that educators show they care about them
97% indicated they feel accepted by educators for who they are
Peer relationships also reflected positive experiences.
94% of students reported feeling comfortable around others at school
91% of students report that other students at school have shown care for them
93% shared that other students treat them with respect
94% indicated they feel accepted by their peers
“These results are a reflection of the strong culture we continue to build at Mascoutah High School,” said Principal Amy Kelly Johnson. “Our staff works intentionally each day to create an environment where students feel known, supported and valued. While we know there is always more work to do and we are always working to improve connections and supports for students, this data shows that the majority of our students are experiencing school in a positive and meaningful way.”
“At MHS, we take all concerns seriously and are committed to continuous improvement,” Mrs. Kelly Johnson added. “If we are not aware of a situation, we cannot address it. But when concerns are brought forward, we act. Our goal is to ensure every student feels safe, supported and connected every day.”
Mascoutah High School will continue to use student feedback, along with ongoing conversations and support systems to strengthen its positive school culture and uphold its commitment to being “The High School of Choice” for the students and staff.
