Local Fire, Police and EMS Greet RFTW

ST. CLAIR COUNTY – Hundreds of motorcycles traveled along Interstate 64 this week as part of the RFTW annual ride, a cross-country journey honoring veterans, prisoners of war, and those still missing in action.
Run For The Wall, commonly known as RFTW, is a nationwide motorcycle ride made up largely of veterans and supporters who travel across the country each year to honor POW/MIA service members and raise awareness for those who never returned home.
As the riders passed through the Metro East area, emergency responders and law enforcement agencies gathered along overpasses to welcome them with large American flags waving above the interstate. Mascoutah Fire Department, police, city employees and EMS along with other local Fire and EMS were among several departments showing support for the riders as they traveled east along I-64. In addition, Mascoutah American Legion, VFW and AMVETS also attended.
The event brings riders from across the country together each May for the trip from California to Washington, D.C., with some participants continuing on additional regional routes. Organizers say the mission of the ride is to promote healing among veterans while raising awareness for POW/MIA service members.
Motorists along I-64 could see long lines of motorcycles traveling in formation as riders made their way through the area. The annual ride has grown into one of the largest organized motorcycle runs in the country, drawing thousands of participants each year.
