Mascoutah High School Book Machine Demonstration
On Monday, October 7, the Mascoutah School district saw the unveiling of the new “Book Nook” vending machine, part of a district-wide initiative to boost literacy. After a ribbon cutting ceremony, a faculty member demonstrated how the machine worked. Holding a gold-colored token, she placed it into the coin slot, and with a quiet whir, the machine released a book from the display.
These book vending machines, strategically placed across all five schools in the district, were purchased through a $35,706 Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) literacy grant. They would now serve as a fun, engaging way for students to earn books through positive behavior and academic achievements.

This is one of the “Book Nook” coins that can be used to “purchase” a book at the machine. They are awarded to students for several different reasons, dictated by school staff and faculty.
