The Lantern BLE brought culinary skills and community spirit to life in Lebanon on Tuesday, Nov. 19, with a special outdoor cooking demonstration for Lebanon’s Daisy Girl Scouts. The event, organized with the help of Michele and Bobby Davis, gave the young Scouts a hands-on experience with cooking basics.

“Michele’s the city accountant, Bobby’s one of the aldermen and their granddaughter is one of the Daisies,” said Adam Evans, owner and chef at The Lantern BLE. The idea came about naturally, he explained, when the Davises suggested a kids’ version of the monthly adult cooking classes he already offers.

Evans tailored the experience to the Scouts’ age group, teaching them how to make mac and cheese from scratch, flatbreads using a Dutch oven and even introducing them to deer meat. “We talked about fire safety all night long too,” Evans said.

The girls also roasted marshmallows and learned the art of maintaining and feeding a fire. “It was really kind of cool. And, you know, we did some deer meat… They got a chance to try something different that they don’t usually get,” Evans noted.

The outdoor setup in front of The Lantern BLE added to the event’s charm, attracting curious passersby. “Out front was awesome,” Evans said. “A couple people from town [asked], ‘Oh, what’s going on?’ We told them about it and they thought it was really cool.”

Evans’ experience working with young children helped make the event a success. “They lose their attention a little bit, they get kind of rowdy… but they really seemed to have a good time,” he said. Parents also got involved, with many staying for the demonstration and learning helpful tips for outdoor cooking.

The event wasn’t just educational; it was a feast. The Daisy Girl Scouts enjoyed pizza, pancakes, bacon, and a decadent s’mores dip. “Everyone had a good time and got a chance to do something,” Evans shared.

For adults interested, The Lantern BLE hosts monthly adult cooking classes. “The next one for December is about Christmas morning,” Evans said. “We’re going to do cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy, cheddar biscuits and bacon gravy, and quiche—things you can make ahead of time to save time and make family time more enjoyable.”
